Overview

Edge Group is an Emirati advanced technology and defense conglomerate headquartered in Abu Dhabi. Established on 5 November 2019, it consolidated more than 25 companies associated with Emirates Defence Industries Company, Emirates Advanced Investments Group, and Tawazun Holding. The group was created to organize and expand the United Arab Emirates’ domestic defense-industrial capabilities while developing commercially viable technologies for international markets. Its portfolio covers a broad range of defense and security activities. These include precision-guided munitions, missiles, loitering munitions, unmanned aerial and ground systems, counter-drone capabilities, electronic warfare, secure communications, cybersecurity, intelligence and surveillance systems, naval vessels, aircraft maintenance, logistics, and training. The group also has activities in space technology and civilian applications of advanced engineering. Its operating structure is organized around areas such as platforms and systems, missiles and weapons, mission support, cyber and communications, and autonomous systems. Edge’s principal subsidiaries and associated businesses include HALCON, which develops precision-guided weapons; ADASI, an unmanned-systems specialist; AMMROC, an aviation maintenance and support company; GAL, which provides aviation and mission support services; KATIM, which develops secure communications; and shipbuilding and naval businesses such as Abu Dhabi Ship Building. Through acquisitions and partnerships, Edge has expanded beyond the UAE. It acquired a majority interest in Estonian robotics company Milrem Robotics, took stakes in Brazilian defense companies SIATT and Condor Non-Lethal Technologies, acquired or invested in aviation businesses in Switzerland and Poland, and established or pursued partnerships with companies and governments in Brazil, Türkiye, Spain, India, Italy, and other markets. The group’s international profile grew rapidly after its launch. It served as an advanced technology partner at the 2019 Dubai Airshow, where affiliated companies presented unmanned aircraft, munitions, and aviation-support capabilities. In the following years, Edge announced major UAE defense contracts, export agreements, new product launches, and joint ventures. At IDEX 2023 in Abu Dhabi, it reported contracts and agreements worth more than AED 18.6 billion, including substantial domestic orders and export business. At the 2023 Dubai Airshow, it presented additional autonomous and smart-weapons systems and reported sales and contracts valued at approximately US$2.37 billion. The company has been recognized by defense-industry rankings as one of the larger arms manufacturers and suppliers based in the Middle East. SIPRI placed Edge among the world’s largest arms companies in 2020, while Defense News ranked it 24th among defense contractors in 2021. Its growth has been linked to strong domestic demand, the UAE’s effort to reduce reliance on foreign defense suppliers, and an export-oriented strategy. In early 2023, Edge said that orders for its products and solutions during 2022 exceeded US$5 billion, with international exports representing approximately one-third of that figure. Edge is led by a board chaired by Faisal Al Bannai and an executive management structure headed by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mansour AlMulla. It employs approximately 12,000 people, according to descriptions of the group in public reference material. The company remains active in defense manufacturing, technology development, acquisitions, international partnerships, and the creation of new businesses, including the Fada space company launched in 2024.

History

Edge Group was formed on 5 November 2019 as part of the United Arab Emirates’ effort to build a more integrated national defense and advanced-technology industry. The new group brought together more than 25 entities associated with Emirates Defence Industries Company, Emirates Advanced Investments Group, and Tawazun Holding. Rather than operating as a single-product manufacturer, Edge was structured as a conglomerate covering weapons, platforms, services, communications, cybersecurity, autonomy, and related engineering activities. The company made its public debut during the 2019 Dubai Airshow, where it acted as the official Advanced Technology Partner. Eleven participating entities displayed unmanned aerial vehicles, long-range munitions, and other capabilities. At the same event, AMMROC announced plans for an aviation maintenance facility at Al Ain International Airport. Shortly afterward, Edge subsidiary HALCON signed a contract valued at approximately US$1 billion to supply Desert Sting precision-guided missiles to the UAE Armed Forces. Other group companies expanded their service activities through aviation maintenance and support agreements, including contracts involving the Kenyan Air Force and the UAE Joint Aviation Command. In early 2020, Edge participated in UAE initiatives focused on advanced technology, Emiratisation, and robotics. ADASI introduced a UAE-developed vertical-takeoff-and-landing unmanned aircraft at the UMEX exhibition in February of that year. The group’s early development reflected two connected objectives: supplying the UAE’s armed forces and creating domestic design and manufacturing capabilities that could eventually serve overseas customers. Edge’s rise was recognized by international defense-industry analysts. SIPRI placed it 22nd in its 2020 ranking of the world’s largest arms companies. Defense News subsequently ranked it 24th among global defense contractors in July 2021. These rankings helped establish Edge as one of the most significant defense groups to emerge from the Middle East, although its position was not retained in the publication’s updated 2024 Top 100 list. A management transition took place on 31 January 2022, when Mansour AlMulla became managing director and chief executive officer and Faisal Al Bannai became chairman of the board. That year, Digital14 was merged into the group and rebranded as KATIM, reinforcing Edge’s secure-communications and cyber-technology portfolio. The group accelerated its internationalization in 2023. Edge reported that orders received during 2022 had exceeded US$5 billion, with approximately one-third coming from international exports and representing a substantial year-on-year increase. In February 2023, it acquired a majority stake in Estonian autonomous-robotics company Milrem Robotics. At IDEX 2023, Edge announced more than AED 18.6 billion in contracts and agreements, including AED 4 billion of export-related business. Announcements included a reported EUR 1 billion agreement connected with the construction of corvettes for the Angolan Navy, domestic orders for Thunder and Desert Sting munitions and HUNTER loitering systems, SHADOW systems, and tactical communications and data links. Edge expanded its Brazilian presence in April 2023 by opening an office in Brasília and entering into cooperation with the Brazilian Navy on anti-ship and supersonic missiles. It later acquired interests in Brazilian smart-weapons company SIATT and non-lethal-technology company Condor. In the UAE, it acquired OryxLabs and Etimad Holding. It also announced stakes in Swiss VTOL manufacturer ANAVIA and Polish aircraft maker FLARIS, broadened its investment activities through Strategic Development Fund, and continued to build a portfolio of autonomous aircraft, robotics, and defense electronics. At the 2023 Dubai Airshow, Edge launched 12 additional systems and solutions and stated that its product portfolio had reached 160 items. It also introduced X Range, described as a comprehensive test-range island intended for commercial use. Sales and contracts announced at the show were reported at approximately US$2.37 billion. In 2024, the group acquired a majority stake in International Golden Group, collaborated with Baykar on integrating Edge weapons with Bayraktar UAVs, signed an ammunition agreement with Indonesia’s PT Pindad, created or planned joint ventures with Fincantieri and Indra, and worked with Adani Defence & Aerospace across missiles, unmanned systems, air defense, weapons, and electronic warfare. The launch of Fada in September 2024 extended Edge’s activities into space. The company’s broader strategy combines acquisitions, joint ventures, domestic procurement, export sales, and development of proprietary systems. Public descriptions place its workforce at approximately 12,000 employees. Edge remains an active UAE-based defense and technology conglomerate with an increasingly international ownership and partnership network.
