Overview

History
Dyson’s origins lie in James Dyson’s dissatisfaction with the loss of suction experienced by conventional bagged vacuum cleaners. In the 1970s, he observed that dust accumulated in the fine material of disposable bags and restricted airflow. While working with industrial powder-coating equipment at the Ballbarrow business, he encountered large cyclone systems used to separate waste particles from air. He reasoned that the same principle could be miniaturised for domestic cleaning. Dyson built an experimental cyclone and connected a cardboard version to a Hoover vacuum with its bag removed. The result suggested that centrifugal separation could maintain airflow without relying on a clogging disposable bag. Between 1979 and 1984, he developed thousands of prototypes. The project struggled to attract British and American licensees because established vacuum manufacturers benefited from the recurring replacement-bag market. Financial backing came in part from businessman Jeremy Fry, while Dyson continued development independently after losing control of his earlier business interests. The first public product based on Dyson’s design was the Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon, manufactured by Zanussi and sold through a mail-order catalogue in 1983. Only a small number were sold. A proposed licensing relationship with Amway later collapsed, and Dyson sued after Amway introduced a similar CMS-1000 machine. A Japanese company, Apex, subsequently licensed the technology.
