Dyson Airblade is a range of commercial electric hand dryers developed and sold by Dyson. History
Dyson Airblade emerged as Dyson's entry into commercial washroom equipment. The first Airblade was introduced in the United Kingdom in 2006 and reached the United States in late 2007. Its central design departure was to use a thin, fast-moving layer of unheated air to strip water from the hands. This contrasted with conventional warm-air dryers, which generally use heated airflow and longer operating periods. Dyson's product claims focused on a drying time of roughly ten seconds, lower energy use and a reduction in paper-towel consumption. The concept was not the first high-speed horizontal hand-drying system. Mitsubishi's Jet Towel had been developed and sold earlier, including in the United States from 2005. These claims were contested by research associated with the University of Westminster and sponsored by the European Tissue Symposium, which compared electric dryers with paper towels and reported less favorable bacterial outcomes for Airblade-type drying. The competing evidence reflects differences in test design, drying duration, hand movement and the definition of hygiene. A 2014 Journal of Hospital Infection paper further examined the potential for high-speed dryers to spread harmless test bacteria through surrounding air. Dyson challenged the study's methods and interpretation. In 2020, research into hand-dryer acoustics reported very high sound levels for some Airblade models, including a measurement of 121 dBA, raising particular concerns for children who must stand close to a dryer. Dyson subsequently engaged with the young study author and its acoustic engineers. Airblade is best understood as an ongoing Dyson product family rather than a separately incorporated company.
