Abacus data and online privacy controversy
DoubleClick’s proposed acquisition of Abacus Direct raised concerns that offline purchase records could be combined with online browsing and advertising data to create detailed consumer profiles. The Federal Trade Commission investigated the matter, and DoubleClick postponed the proposed data integration while modifying its privacy commitments. The FTC closed the investigation in 2000 without an enforcement action.
