Overview
Dolomitibus, formally Dolomiti Bus S.p.A., is a local public transport company based in Belluno in Italy’s Veneto region. Its services cover the mountainous province of Belluno, including urban transport in Belluno and interurban connections linking communities across the Dolomites, the Piave valley, Cadore, Comelico, Alpago, Agordino, Feltre, and nearby areas. The company operates as a regional mobility provider rather than as a national coach brand, combining scheduled city bus services with rural, intermunicipal, tourist, and strategically important mountain routes. The business traces its origins to the Buzzatti company, established around 1914 to provide bus services in the Belluno area. The original enterprise was renamed Buzzatti Giovanni e F.lli S.p.A. in 1956. In 1982 it adopted the Dolomiti Bus name, marking the creation of the identity under which the expanded provincial transport operation became known. During the 1980s and 1990s, Dolomiti Bus consolidated a fragmented regional market by incorporating or absorbing several operators. These included Zasio, which served municipalities on the left bank of the Piave River; SAAB F.lli Da Rolt, active in Alpago; Automobilistica Cadore, serving Cadore, Comelico, Valle d’Ampezzo, and the Longaronese area; Belluno Bus, the urban operator in Belluno; Conz, based in Seren del Grappa; and a branch of Andreella in Ponte nelle Alpi. The company’s ownership evolved from predominantly public control toward a mixed public-private structure. In 1999, the Province of Belluno held 83.47 percent and the Municipality of Belluno 16.53 percent of the company’s share capital. At that time Dolomiti Bus also held a 49 percent interest in Mobel, which managed paid parking facilities in Belluno and the escalator linking the Lambioi car park with the historic centre, alongside smaller interests in local tourism and sports-infrastructure companies. A capital increase in 2000 accompanied a partial privatization process. Autoguidovie acquired 26.07 percent and Autolinee dell’Emilia 13.43 percent through a public tender. Autoguidovie later bought Autolinee dell’Emilia’s interest, reaching 39.5 percent in 2005. The private shareholding then changed several times. In 2008, Transdev Italia acquired Autoguidovie’s stake, and in 2011 that business was transferred to RATP Dev. Between 2013 and 2014, RATP Dev sold its Dolomiti Bus interests to entrepreneur Federico Mattioli in a transaction reported at €6.2 million; portions were distributed through Veneta Bus and La Linea. Autoguidovie subsequently returned as an investor, acquiring a further block of shares after Mattioli offered 24.5 percent for sale. A 2021 capital increase raised the share capital to €8,935,962.50 and brought Autoguidovie to a majority holding of 50.65 percent. The reported shareholder structure also included the Province of Belluno with 42.35 percent and Federico Mattioli with 7 percent. Dolomitibus is headquartered on Via Col da Ren in Belluno, where it maintains its principal workshop and depot. It also operates agencies in Belluno, Feltre, Agordo, and Calalzo di Cadore. The reported fleet comprises approximately 204 buses, with an average age of about ten years, and has been described as among Italy’s more modern and environmentally oriented local transit fleets. The company is continuing fleet renewal through the planned introduction of 23 buses in September 2025, supported by nearly €7 million in investment and public co-financing under Italy’s National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Mobility. The operator also has a role in regional and event-related mobility. Its Calalzo–Cortina line 30 links a rail-accessible point with the important mountain destination of Cortina d’Ampezzo. In preparation for the Milan–Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Dolomitibus planned an expanded service and a special fare for the route, with seasonal operating phases, timetables, and frequencies. History
Dolomitibus developed from the Buzzatti bus company, founded around 1914 to manage public transport services in the Province of Belluno. The enterprise became Buzzatti Giovanni e F.lli S.p.A. in 1956 and changed its name to Dolomiti Bus in 1982. The new identity accompanied a long period of regional consolidation. In 1984, the company incorporated Zasio, SAAB F.lli Da Rolt, and Automobilistica Cadore, thereby extending its reach across the left bank of the Piave, Alpago, Cadore, Comelico, Valle d’Ampezzo, and the Longaronese area. Belluno Bus, the city’s urban transport operator, joined the organization in 1987. Conz of Seren del Grappa was incorporated in 1989, followed by a branch of Andreella of Ponte nelle Alpi in 1995. The ownership structure was initially public. On 15 April 1999, the Province of Belluno held 83.47 percent and the Municipality of Belluno held 16.53 percent. Dolomiti Bus also had interests in related local mobility and tourism entities, including a 49 percent stake in Mobel, the company associated with Belluno’s paid parking facilities and the Lambioi-centre escalator. Smaller holdings were reported in Società Turismo Belluno and Nuovi Impianti Sportivi. A 2000 capital increase to €6,266,173.50 accompanied a partial privatization. A public tender awarded stakes to Autoguidovie and Autolinee dell’Emilia. Autoguidovie later acquired the latter’s interest and reached 39.5 percent in 2005. In 2008, Transdev Italia acquired the Autoguidovie interest. Transdev Italia was subsequently transferred to RATP Dev in 2011. In 2013, the Province acquired the shares previously held by the Municipality. Between 2013 and 2014, RATP Dev sold its Dolomiti Bus shares to entrepreneur Federico Mattioli in a transaction reported at €6.2 million. Mattioli distributed holdings through Veneta Bus and La Linea, each reported at 5 percent. After an unsuccessful or incomplete initial interest from ATV, Autoguidovie later repurchased a 24.5 percent block offered by Mattioli. In 2021, another capital increase brought the company’s share capital to €8,935,962.50 and made Autoguidovie the majority shareholder with 50.65 percent. The reported remaining shareholders were the Province of Belluno at 42.35 percent and Federico Mattioli at 7 percent. The company is headquartered in Belluno and operates its main depot and workshop there. Agencies are located in Belluno, Feltre, Agordo, and Calalzo di Cadore. Its approximately 204-bus fleet supports both urban routes and long-distance local connections across a mountainous province. Fleet modernization has been a significant operational theme, with 23 new buses planned for entry into service in September 2025 through a nearly €7 million publicly supported investment. Dolomitibus has also planned enhanced mobility for the Milan–Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, particularly on the Calalzo–Cortina line 30, combining additional service with a special fare and seasonal timetables.
