Overview
Doğuş Holding, commonly known as Doğuş Group, is one of Turkey's major privately controlled conglomerates. Based in Istanbul, the group operates through a broad portfolio of companies and brands rather than through a single consumer product. Its activities have included automotive distribution and finance, construction and engineering, hotels and resorts, restaurants and entertainment, media, luxury and specialty retail, real estate, technology and energy. The group's foundations date to 1951, when Ayhan Şahenk began investing in construction. That activity developed into Doğuş Construction, which became associated with major Turkish infrastructure projects, including roads, ports and hospitals. The group expanded into tourism in the 1960s, including the creation of Antur Tourism and the acquisition of Club Alantur in Alanya. During the late 1970s it entered banking, and during the more liberalized Turkish economy of the 1980s it diversified further through automotive imports, international partnerships, tourism ventures and food businesses. A major phase of expansion followed under Ferit Şahenk. After returning to Istanbul in 1989 and receiving operating experience at Garanti Bank, he moved into the holding company and developed a more diversified portfolio. Doğuş entered or expanded in media, food retail, human-resources services, automotive distribution and other sectors. The group became closely associated with NTV and a wider collection of television, radio, publishing and digital properties. It also built large positions in premium hospitality, restaurant and lifestyle businesses through D.ream, D-Hotelier and related platforms. Banking was historically one of the group's most important activities. Doğuş was a leading shareholder in Garanti Bank, later Garanti BBVA, before reducing its position through transactions with General Electric and, subsequently, BBVA. The banking disposals helped demonstrate the group's willingness to recycle capital from mature financial assets into other sectors, although the group remained exposed to the financing conditions affecting Turkish businesses. Doğuş has also pursued projects that combine real estate, tourism, culture and urban development. In 2013, it won the tender to develop Galataport Istanbul in partnership with Bilgili Holding. The project transformed part of Istanbul's waterfront into a cruise-port, retail, hospitality and cultural destination. In connection with the development, the group supported the relocation and expansion of Istanbul Modern, whose new building was designed by Renzo Piano. The group has maintained a significant international orientation in hospitality and restaurants. Through D.ream, it has invested in or operated concepts including Zuma, Roka, Coya, Amazónico and Nusr-Et. These businesses helped Doğuş move beyond a predominantly Turkish conglomerate identity and into globally distributed premium dining. It has also operated or invested in hotels, resorts, marinas and destination properties in Turkey and abroad. Doğuş faced financial pressure during Turkey's 2018 currency and debt crisis and sought restructuring discussions with lenders. It subsequently pursued asset sales and deleveraging, including disposals or reductions involving hospitality, real estate, marina and yacht-refit assets. The group remains active, but its portfolio and ownership interests have changed over time. Because many subsidiary holdings are periodically reorganized, sold or placed in joint ventures, individual company lists should be treated as time-sensitive rather than as a permanent description of the group.
History
Doğuş Group traces its origins to Ayhan Şahenk's construction investments in 1951. Construction became the foundation for a wider Turkish business group, and Doğuş Construction was formally established in 1966. In the same period, the group expanded into tourism through Antur Tourism and the acquisition of Club Alantur in Alanya. The group entered banking in the late 1970s. During the 1980s, as Turkey moved toward a more market-oriented economy, Doğuş broadened its activities through imports, joint ventures and partnerships with international companies. Automotive distribution, hotels, food and other consumer-facing operations joined the original construction and banking businesses. Ferit Şahenk returned to Istanbul in 1989 and began his professional development at Garanti Bank. He later moved to the holding company and became its central decision-maker after Ayhan Şahenk died in April 2001. Under Ferit Şahenk, Doğuş expanded its media presence, food retail activities, automotive businesses, recruitment services and international partnerships. NTV became one of the group's most visible media assets, while the group also operated radio, television, publishing and digital brands. Banking remained important during the group's expansion. Doğuş reduced its Garanti Bank stake through a 2004 transaction with General Electric and later participated in the ownership transition that led to Garanti's association with BBVA. The group used portfolio transactions to redirect capital toward automotive, tourism, media, restaurants, retail and real estate. In 2013, Doğuş and Bilgili Holding won the public tender for Galataport Istanbul. The project combined a cruise terminal with commercial, cultural, hospitality and urban-realm uses on Istanbul's historic waterfront. Doğuş also supported Istanbul Modern's new museum building, designed by Renzo Piano. The group's international consumer and hospitality strategy accelerated through D.ream, its restaurant investment and management platform. D.ream developed a portfolio that included Turkish concepts and international restaurant groups such as Zuma, Roka, Coya, Amazónico and Nusr-Et. Doğuş also invested in hotels, resorts and marinas under brands including D-Marin and D-Hotelier, while maintaining automotive distribution relationships for Volkswagen Group brands in Turkey. The 2018 Turkish currency and debt crisis created substantial pressure. Doğuş sought discussions with lenders regarding its debt and later undertook disposals and balance-sheet measures. Reported transactions and reductions included interests associated with Capri Palace Hotel, İstinye Park, MB92 and premium marinas. The group continues to operate as a diversified holding company, but its precise portfolio changes as investments are acquired, reorganized, partnered or sold.
