Overview
DMG Mori Seiki Co., Ltd., now commonly branded as DMG MORI, is a Japanese industrial company focused on the design, manufacture and sale of machine tools and related production technologies. Its portfolio covers computer numerical control lathes, turning centers, horizontal and vertical machining centers, five-axis and multi-axis systems, grinding machines, additive manufacturing equipment, measuring technology, automation, digital production software, engineering and lifecycle services. The company serves manufacturers that require high precision, repeatability and increasingly integrated production processes, including customers in automotive, aerospace, medical technology, energy, semiconductor-related equipment and general industrial manufacturing. The business began in 1948 when the Mori brothers established Mori Seiki. Its initial activity was textile machinery, but the company moved into machine tools in 1958. It entered numerical-control lathe production in 1968, an important transition that placed the company in the emerging field of programmable and automated metal cutting. Over subsequent decades, Mori Seiki expanded its own manufacturing and development capabilities while adding businesses and technologies. Taiyo Koki, a grinding-machine manufacturer, joined the group in 2001, and Mori Seiki acquired the Japanese business assets of Hitachi Seiki in 2002. A defining turning point was the partnership with Germany's Gildemeister AG, owner of the DMG machine-tool brand. The relationship began in 2009 and included the consolidation of the two companies' United States operations in 2010. The two organizations adopted the shared DMG MORI identity in 2013, combining Mori Seiki's Japanese manufacturing and engineering heritage with Gildemeister's European brands, production facilities and customer network. In 2016, DMG Mori Co., Ltd. acquired majority control of the German company and established a structure in which DMG Mori GmbH became the controlling entity for DMG Mori AG. The group operates an international manufacturing, sales, service and engineering network. Its production footprint has included facilities in Japan, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United States, supported by sales and service locations across dozens of countries. Its brands and production units include Deckel Maho, Gildemeister, Sauer, Gital, Graziano, Famot, Taiyo Koki and Magnescale. The company also works with manufacturing partners, including Lakshmi Machine Works in India. DMG Mori's business model extends beyond the sale of individual machines: it promotes complete production cells combining machine tools, robots, pallet systems, measuring equipment, monitoring, software and technical services. Digitalization has become a central part of the brand's positioning. DMG Mori has developed software and connectivity offerings for machine monitoring, production planning, process optimization and factory integration, and in 2019 partnered with Tulip Interfaces to integrate Tulip's manufacturing software with DMG Mori equipment. The company has also invested in innovation infrastructure, including the Tokyo Digital Innovation Center, and has promoted automation and additive manufacturing alongside conventional subtractive machining. DMG Mori is also visible outside conventional industrial marketing through sports and event partnerships. It has partnered with Red Bull Racing Honda and has had links with Toyota's motorsport activities. In sailing, its DMG Mori Sailing Team completed the Vendée Globe in 2020 with skipper Kojiro Shiraishi, representing an effort to associate the brand with engineering, endurance and technological performance. The company remains an active global machine-tool manufacturer under the leadership of the Mori family and its international operating organization.
History
Mori Seiki was founded in Japan in 1948 by the Mori brothers. The company first made textile machinery, reflecting the industrial needs of postwar Japan, before entering machine-tool manufacturing in 1958. Its move into numerical-control lathes in 1968 gave it a foundation in automated metalworking and helped define its later specialization in computer-controlled production equipment. The company expanded through organic development and acquisitions. Taiyo Koki, known for grinding machines, joined the group in 2001. In 2002, Mori Seiki acquired business assets of Hitachi Seiki in Japan. These moves broadened its capabilities beyond turning and supported a wider machine-tool portfolio. The company also developed its international presence, including the opening of a United States headquarters in 2009. In the same year, Mori Seiki entered a strategic partnership with Gildemeister AG, the German company associated with the DMG machine-tool brand. Their US operations were merged in 2010. The partnership deepened over time, and in 2013 the two companies adopted the shared DMG MORI name. This combination linked Mori Seiki's Japanese operations with Gildemeister's European engineering, manufacturing and distribution organization. The relationship became more structurally integrated in 2016, when DMG Mori Co., Ltd. acquired majority ownership of DMG Mori AG. A profit-and-loss transfer agreement and a dominance agreement were approved for a structure involving DMG Mori GmbH as the controlling company. The resulting group includes production and technology operations in Japan, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United States, together with a broad international sales and service network. The group's manufacturing organization has included the Nara and Iga campuses, Taiyo Koki and Magnescale in Japan; Deckel Maho, Gildemeister and Sauer facilities in Germany; Gital and Graziano in Italy; Famot in Poland; and a Davis, California site in the United States. DMG Mori has also worked with external manufacturing partners. Its equipment portfolio includes CNC lathes, turning centers, horizontal and vertical machining centers, five-axis systems, grinders, additive manufacturing equipment, automation, measuring technology and software. During the late 2010s, digitalization became a more prominent part of the company's strategy. DMG Mori established the Tokyo Digital Innovation Center in 2018 and opened a new plant in Pleszew, Poland, the same year. In 2019, it partnered with Tulip Interfaces to connect Tulip's software with DMG MORI machines. The company increasingly presented its products as integrated manufacturing systems combining equipment, automation, monitoring, software and service. The company has also used international sports partnerships to communicate its engineering identity. Its activities have included a partnership with Red Bull Racing Honda and links with Toyota's World Rally organization. In 2020, the DMG Mori Sailing Team completed the Vendée Globe with Kojiro Shiraishi as skipper, becoming the first Asian team to complete the race. Russia became a significant reputational and compliance issue after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. DMG Mori stated that it had withdrawn from the Russian market. In 2023, investigative reporting alleged continued operations at a Russian facility. The company responded that existing contracts required certain production to continue and denied supplying military-related companies. DMG Mori remains an active Japanese-headquartered global machine-tool group, with the DMG MORI brand used across a broad industrial technology platform.
