Disney XD

Disney XD (Scandinavia) was a regional Disney television channel aimed at children and young teenagers in the Nordic and Baltic markets. It was managed from the United Kingdom and formed part of Disney's international branded-channel portfolio. The service replaced the regional versions or programming roles associated with Jetix and Toon Disney, launching on 12 September 2009. Its arrival combined the action-oriented and youth-focused identity associated with Jetix with Disney's broader portfolio of animated series, live-action programs, and films. The channel generally broadcast 16 hours per day, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Central European Time. Unlike the formerly commercial-free Toon Disney service, Disney XD was funded in part through advertising, continuing the commercial model used by Jetix. It inherited substantial distribution from the earlier channels, including carriage on cable systems and terrestrial availability. In Denmark, the channel became available through the Boxer terrestrial platform from 1 November 2009. Its distribution also included an analogue frequency on YouSee's cable network that had previously been used by Jetix and Hallmark Channel. Disney XD's initial schedule drew heavily on shows that had previously appeared on Jetix and Toon Disney. Early programming included Pokémon Battle Dimension, Galactik Football, Dinosaur King, Jimmy Two-Shoes, and Kid vs. Kat. The channel also broadened its offer with Disney-produced live-action series such as Aaron Stone and with feature films. The first program broadcast was The Legend of Tarzan, while the first film shown was Ratatouille. Over time, Disney Channel programming and a wider range of Disney Television Animation productions became increasingly prominent. In its final period, the service carried animated series including Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens, Amphibia, Gravity Falls, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Big Hero 6: The Series, and DuckTales. It also showed Spider-Man, selected European and British productions such as Dude, That's My Ghost! and Counterfeit Cat, and live-action titles including K.C. Undercover and Lab Rats. Films were generally scheduled on weekends, with occasional exceptions. Disney XD (Scandinavia) closed on 31 December 2020, at the same time as Disney XD services in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The closure formed part of Disney's broader shift toward streaming distribution and portfolio consolidation. Much of the channel's programming was redirected to Disney Channel and Disney+, leaving the Scandinavian Disney XD service as a discontinued regional television brand.
