Disney Adventure

Disney Adventure is a cruise ship owned and operated by Disney Cruise Line, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. It is the eighth vessel in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and the first and only completed ship of the Global class. The ship began life as Global Dream, a vessel ordered by Genting Hong Kong for its Dream Cruises business, but the project was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent insolvency of Genting Hong Kong and its German shipbuilding subsidiary, MV Werften. Disney Cruise Line acquired the partially completed ship from the insolvency estate in 2022 and substantially redesigned it for family-oriented cruising. At more than 208,000 gross tons and approximately 342.7 metres long, Disney Adventure is among the largest cruise ships in the world and the largest cruise ship built in Germany. It is also notable for its four funnels, although the two forward funnels are decorative rather than functional. The ship’s scale is significantly greater than that of Disney’s earlier Dream- and Wish-class ships, while its redesigned accommodation plan reduces passenger density relative to the original Global-class concept. Disney formally revealed the new name, Disney Adventure, at the Destination D23 event in September 2023. The completed ship contains seven principal themed neighbourhoods: Disney Imagination Garden, Town Square, San Fransokyo Street, Marvel Landing, Disney Discovery Reef, Wayfinder Bay and Toy Story Place. These areas translate the “lands” model associated with Disney theme parks into a shipboard environment. Attractions include the Storybook Castle installation, Marvel Landing’s Ironcycle Test Run roller coaster, Pym Quantum Racers, Groot Galaxy Spin, and Woody and Jessie’s Wild Slides. The vessel also offers live theatre, cinemas, character-based entertainment, family activities and Disney’s rotational dining system. The ship was designed for methanol-capable operation, but the availability of green methanol in Singapore affected its initial fuel mix. It instead entered service using a combination of lower-emission and sustainable fuels, including hydrotreated vegetable oil where available. Propulsion is supplied by six MAN engines powering three ABB Azipod units. Disney Adventure represents a strategic expansion of Disney Cruise Line beyond its traditional United States homeports. It is the company’s first ship intended to operate year-round outside the United States, with three- and four-night voyages departing from Singapore and returning to Singapore without scheduled port calls. The itinerary concept positions the vessel itself as the destination, emphasizing onboard entertainment, themed spaces and family services rather than a sequence of shore excursions.

The ship originated in Genting Hong Kong’s Global-class cruise-ship programme. Two large vessels were ordered in 2016 for the group’s cruise businesses, with construction assigned to German shipbuilding operations that were later consolidated under MV Werften. The design was initially intended for high-capacity Asian cruising and incorporated features associated with the original operator’s business model. Work formally began in 2018, with steel construction taking place across MV Werften facilities in Wismar and Rostock. The keel of the first vessel was laid in Rostock in September 2018, and a major hull section was later transferred by floating it between the two shipyards for final assembly. The project encountered severe delays after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted shipyard operations and cruise demand. Genting Hong Kong subsequently faced a financial crisis, while MV Werften sought government support to continue operating. MV Werften filed for insolvency in January 2022. The first Global-class ship, then known as Global Dream and only partly complete, was sold to Disney Cruise Line later that year. The second planned ship, which was less advanced, was not completed and was sold for scrap. Disney acquired the vessel because its existing hull offered a way to add substantial capacity to Disney Cruise Line more quickly than commissioning a new ship. Meyer Werft, Disney’s established shipbuilding partner, was engaged to complete the vessel at the former Wismar facility, which had become associated with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The acquisition was not a simple change of ownership. Disney Imagineers and shipbuilding teams reworked the interior and parts of the structure to convert a design intended for a different cruise proposition into a Disney family ship. The redesign reduced the original passenger plan and altered the arrangement of cabins, public areas, kitchens and entertainment venues. Internal steel supports were removed or relocated, galley facilities were expanded, and new themed restaurants and performance spaces were incorporated. Disney also replaced much of the original onboard concept with neighbourhoods based on Disney, Pixar, Marvel and other company properties. The resulting vessel was larger than Disney’s previous largest ships and included attractions unusual for a cruise ship, including a roller coaster at sea. Disney announced the Disney Adventure name in September 2023. The ship was floated out in April 2025 and undertook sea trials later that year. Its delivery and introduction to service followed a revised schedule, with the maiden voyage moving from the originally expected December 2025 date to March 2026. Before entering regular service, the vessel repositioned from Europe toward Asia and reached Singapore in early March 2026. It was christened there before beginning its first commercial sailing. The Singapore deployment is strategically significant for Disney Cruise Line. Rather than using Singapore as a seasonal stop, Disney Adventure is planned as a year-round homeported ship, initially supporting the company’s first regular cruise operation based outside the United States. Its short, entirely at-sea itineraries are designed to make the ship’s attractions, entertainment and dining the principal destination. The ship is planned to remain in this role at least through the beginning of the 2030s, subject to future operational decisions.
