Overview
Disney Adventure World is the second theme park at Disneyland Paris in Marne-la-Vallée, France. It opened on 16 March 2002 as Walt Disney Studios Park, a comparatively compact gate intended to complement Disneyland Park with a theme based on filmmaking, Hollywood production and behind-the-scenes studio environments. The park was developed after earlier, more ambitious plans for a Disney-MGM Studios Europe park were abandoned during Disneyland Paris's financial difficulties in the early 1990s. Once the resort returned to profitability, a smaller second gate was revived, formally announced in 1999 and constructed from 2000. The original park opened with a limited attraction portfolio and a deliberately industrial visual language. Its signature symbol was the Earffel Tower, a water tower topped with Mickey Mouse ears and inspired by the studio imagery associated with Disney's Hollywood Studios and the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank. Initial attractions included Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Avec Aerosmith, Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic and Flying Carpets Over Agrabah. The park's early years were difficult. Attendance was affected by the post-September 11 tourism downturn, while guests and observers criticized the sparse attraction mix, rushed development and extensive use of inexpensive warehouse-style backlot theming. From 2007 onward, Disney progressively broadened the park's identity. Toon Studio introduced animation-focused environments and attractions, including Crush's Coaster and Cars Quatre Roues Rallye. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror expanded Production Courtyard in 2007, while Stitch Live!, Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage! and Disney Stars 'n' Cars added interactive entertainment and character programming. Toy Story Playland opened in 2010 with three attractions designed around the conceit that visitors had been reduced to toy size. Ratatouille: L'Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy, which opened in 2014, further shifted the park toward immersive storytelling and recognizable film worlds. A major strategic transformation was announced in 2018. The approximately €2 billion multi-year expansion was designed to enlarge the park, introduce a central lake and replace much of the older backlot concept with lands inspired by Marvel and Frozen. Construction required the closure or replacement of several opening-era attractions. Cars: Road Trip reused and rethemed part of the former tram-tour route, while Avengers Campus opened in 2022 with Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure and Avengers Assemble: Flight Force, an Iron Man-themed successor to Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. In 2024, Disney announced that the park would be renamed Disney Adventure World when the next phase of the expansion opened. The rebranding reflects a broader move away from the original studio-lot premise toward a collection of story worlds and adventure environments. The plan includes Adventure Way, Adventure Bay, World of Frozen and a future Lion King-themed area, alongside World Premiere, Worlds of Pixar and Avengers Campus. World Premiere and World Premiere Plaza were announced as reorganized entrance and entertainment areas, while the Frozen land was planned around an Arendelle setting, a new version of Frozen Ever After, dining and retail. The park is owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company through its Experiences business and serves both the French domestic market and Disneyland Paris's large international visitor base. Its principal offering is not a standalone consumer product but a themed leisure experience combining rides, live entertainment, restaurants, merchandise, character encounters and seasonal programming. In 2024, under its former name, it received approximately 5.59 million visitors according to the cited reference material, ranking among Europe's most visited theme parks. The park's current positioning is therefore a hybrid of cinematic world-building, major franchise storytelling and destination-scale resort entertainment.
History
Plans for a second Disney theme park at the Paris resort originally contemplated a Disney-MGM Studios Europe or Disney-MGM Studios Paris gate opening in the mid-1990s. Those plans were cancelled around 1992 as Disneyland Paris faced severe financial pressure. After the resort's financial position improved, Disney revived the concept on a smaller scale. The project was announced on 29 September 1999, construction began in 2000, and Walt Disney Studios Park opened on 16 March 2002 for Disneyland Paris's tenth anniversary. The opening park was organized around the idea of a working film studio. Its environments emphasized production facilities, sound stages, backlots and Hollywood references rather than fully realized fictional lands. The initial attraction selection was limited, with Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Avec Aerosmith, Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic and Flying Carpets Over Agrabah among the attractions operating at opening. The park struggled commercially in its early period. The tourism decline following the September 11 attacks, low attendance, limited capacity and criticism of the park's inexpensive industrial design all contributed to a weak initial reputation. Disney began reshaping the gate in 2007. The Toon Studio area introduced animation-themed storytelling, Crush's Coaster and Cars Quatre Roues Rallye. Production Courtyard was enlarged by the opening of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in December 2007. Further entertainment changes followed in 2008 and 2009, including Stitch Live!, Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage! and Disney Stars 'n' Cars. Toy Story Playland opened in August 2010 with RC Racer, Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop and Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin. Ratatouille: L'Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy opened in 2014, adding a major attraction based on a specific Disney-Pixar story and strengthening the park's move toward franchise immersion. Disney announced the park's largest redevelopment program in 2018. The plan called for approximately €2 billion of investment, a substantial increase in the park's footprint, a new lake and lands themed to Marvel and Frozen. Demolition and closures began in 2019 and 2020, including the former Armageddon – Les Effets Speciaux, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Avec Aerosmith, Studio Tram Tour: Behind the Magic and The Moteurs... Action! show. The COVID-19 pandemic also caused temporary closures of Disneyland Paris in 2020 and delayed the resort's planned reopening in 2021. Cars: Road Trip began soft opening in June 2021, adapting part of the former tram-tour route with Cars theming. Avengers Campus soft opened in July 2022 and became the first major phase of the new expansion. Its attractions included Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure and Avengers Assemble: Flight Force, an Iron Man-themed retheming of the former Aerosmith roller coaster. The development replaced most of the old Backlot area. In April 2024, Disney announced that the park would adopt the name Disney Adventure World when the next expansion phase opened. The proposed layout reorganized the entrance as World Premiere, added World Premiere Plaza and retained or expanded Worlds of Pixar and Avengers Campus. Adventure Way was planned as a landscaped route leading to Adventure Bay, a new central lake surrounded by future themed areas. World of Frozen was designed around Arendelle and a seasonal celebration called Summer Snow Day, with a new or expanded Frozen Ever After attraction, dining and retail. Disney also announced a future Lion King area, with further attraction details to be developed. The park continued to use temporary and replacement entertainment during the transition. Alice & The Queen of Hearts: Back to Wonderland was announced as a replacement for The Moteurs... Action!, while other short-term programming included Minnie's Musical Moment. World Premiere and World Premiere Plaza were reported as opening in May 2025. The cited reference material gives 29 March 2026 as the opening date for Adventure Way and World of Frozen and as the date associated with the Disney Adventure World name. The park's evolution illustrates Disney's shift from a generic studio-backlot model toward higher-investment, intellectual-property-led environments designed to support repeat visitation and stronger integration with the wider Disneyland Paris resort.
