2016
Clean Air Act resolution over 2010-compliant engines
Detroit Diesel agreed to pay $28.5 million to resolve allegations that 7,786 heavy-duty engines sold for 2010-model-year vehicles did not satisfy stricter federal emissions requirements. The engines had been substantially assembled in 2009 and completed in early 2010; the company maintained that its interpretation of the applicable EPA rules permitted the practice.
1998
Federal emissions-testing settlement involving diesel manufacturers
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced an $83.4 million group of fines involving Detroit Diesel and six other diesel-engine manufacturers. Regulators alleged that engine-control systems reduced emissions during laboratory testing but allowed higher nitrogen-oxide emissions during normal highway operation. The manufacturers also agreed to corrective measures and additional expenditure.
