Overview
Desmet is a Belgian multinational process-engineering and equipment business whose technologies convert oilseeds, grains and tropical oils into food ingredients, protein feed, edible oils and fats, oleochemicals and biofuels. The company traces its origins to 1946, when engineer Jean-Albert De Smet established an engineering business near Antwerp to commercialize extraction technology developed through his work at the Antwerp Oil Mill. History
Desmet was established in 1946 by Belgian engineer Jean-Albert De Smet. At the time, De Smet was director of the Antwerp Oil Mill and decided to create an engineering company to commercialize his extraction invention. The resulting business, initially known as Extraction De Smet, operated from Edegem near Antwerp and focused on equipment and plant technology for oilseed processing. During its first decades, the company progressively expanded its technical scope. Oilseed preparation and extraction formed the initial foundation in 1946. Oil-refining capabilities were added in 1963, followed by grain handling and feed-milling activities in 1975 through cooperation with Stolz. Fat-modification technology was added in 1983. These developments transformed Desmet from a specialist extraction business into a broader supplier of process systems for edible oils, fats, grains and feed. Internationalization accompanied the portfolio expansion. Desmet opened or established engineering and commercial offices in Spain in 1966, Mexico and Argentina in 1969, Brazil in 1970, Malaysia in 1978, the United States in 1979, Singapore in 1980 and India in 1984. The geographic network enabled the company to engineer and support plants for customers in major oilseed, food and agricultural-processing markets. In 1988, RoseDowns became part of Desmet. The British company, based in Kingston upon Hull, had historical roots dating to 1777 and specialized in continuous oilseed presses. RoseDowns added mechanical pressing expertise to Desmet's extraction and plant-engineering portfolio. Desmet's relationship with Stolz likewise supported its presence in grain handling and feed and food milling machinery. The next major corporate milestone came in December 2004, when De Smet Technologies and Services and Ballestra, an Italian provider of detergent, surfactant and chemical technologies, merged their operations. The new Desmet Ballestra organization combined process capabilities across oils, fats, chemicals and renewable fuels. It subsequently installed more than 120 first-generation biodiesel plants around the world.
