Overview

Desmet is a Belgian multinational process-engineering and equipment business whose technologies convert oilseeds, grains and tropical oils into food ingredients, protein feed, edible oils and fats, oleochemicals and biofuels. The company traces its origins to 1946, when engineer Jean-Albert De Smet established an engineering business near Antwerp to commercialize extraction technology developed through his work at the Antwerp Oil Mill. From that starting point, Desmet expanded from oilseed preparation and extraction into oil refining, grain handling, feed milling, fat modification and related process technologies. The company grew internationally through a network of engineering and commercial offices. Locations were established in Spain in 1966, Mexico and Argentina in 1969, Brazil in 1970, Malaysia in 1978, the United States in 1979, Singapore in 1980 and India in 1984. This expansion supported the delivery of custom-engineered plants and equipment to processors in multiple agricultural and industrial markets. Desmet broadened its equipment portfolio through the addition of RoseDowns in 1988. RoseDowns is a United Kingdom business with roots dating to the eighteenth century and specializes in the design and manufacture of continuous oilseed presses. Its operations remain associated with Kingston upon Hull. Desmet also developed a relationship with Stolz in grain handling, feed milling and food-milling machinery; Stolz is now one of the principal brands associated with the Desmet business. In December 2004, De Smet Technologies and Services combined operations with Italian technology provider Ballestra. The resulting Desmet Ballestra organization brought together Desmet's oilseed and fats expertise with Ballestra's technologies for detergents, surfactants and chemicals, and it became active in biodiesel plant development. The combined business installed more than 120 first-generation biodiesel plants, according to company and reference material. Desmet continued to extend its geographic footprint with offices in Indonesia in 2011, Morocco in 2015 and Vietnam in 2019. In 2020, it acquired German company Serptec, a specialist in rendering presses. The company also began developing pretreatment technologies for hydrotreated vegetable oil and sustainable aviation fuel in 2012, addressing second-generation biofuel applications for road and air transport. A major corporate change occurred in 2022, when the private-equity owners of Desmet Ballestra separated the organization into two businesses. Desmet was formed as the entity containing the Desmet, RoseDowns and Stolz activities, while Ballestra continued as a separate company. Desmet subsequently became an independent business unit within Alfa Laval's Food & Water Division. Alfa Laval owns all of Desmet's shares. The business is described as owning approximately 70 patents and operating innovation centers in Belgium, France and Malaysia. Its current identity therefore combines long-established oilseed and fats-processing know-how with equipment and engineering capabilities for feed, food, rendering and renewable-fuel production.

History

Desmet was established in 1946 by Belgian engineer Jean-Albert De Smet. At the time, De Smet was director of the Antwerp Oil Mill and decided to create an engineering company to commercialize his extraction invention. The resulting business, initially known as Extraction De Smet, operated from Edegem near Antwerp and focused on equipment and plant technology for oilseed processing. During its first decades, the company progressively expanded its technical scope. Oilseed preparation and extraction formed the initial foundation in 1946. Oil-refining capabilities were added in 1963, followed by grain handling and feed-milling activities in 1975 through cooperation with Stolz. Fat-modification technology was added in 1983. These developments transformed Desmet from a specialist extraction business into a broader supplier of process systems for edible oils, fats, grains and feed. Internationalization accompanied the portfolio expansion. Desmet opened or established engineering and commercial offices in Spain in 1966, Mexico and Argentina in 1969, Brazil in 1970, Malaysia in 1978, the United States in 1979, Singapore in 1980 and India in 1984. The geographic network enabled the company to engineer and support plants for customers in major oilseed, food and agricultural-processing markets. In 1988, RoseDowns became part of Desmet. The British company, based in Kingston upon Hull, had historical roots dating to 1777 and specialized in continuous oilseed presses. RoseDowns added mechanical pressing expertise to Desmet's extraction and plant-engineering portfolio. Desmet's relationship with Stolz likewise supported its presence in grain handling and feed and food milling machinery. The next major corporate milestone came in December 2004, when De Smet Technologies and Services and Ballestra, an Italian provider of detergent, surfactant and chemical technologies, merged their operations. The new Desmet Ballestra organization combined process capabilities across oils, fats, chemicals and renewable fuels. It subsequently installed more than 120 first-generation biodiesel plants around the world. Desmet Ballestra continued its geographic development by opening offices in Indonesia in 2011, Morocco in 2015 and Vietnam in 2019. In parallel, Desmet began developing pretreatment systems for hydrotreated vegetable oil and sustainable aviation fuel in 2012. These systems addressed second-generation biofuel production for road and aviation transport. In 2020, the group acquired Serptec, a German specialist in rendering presses, adding another equipment capability relevant to animal by-product and fats-processing industries. In 2022, the private-equity owners of Desmet Ballestra reorganized the business into two separate entities. The Desmet company retained the Desmet, RoseDowns and Stolz activities, while Ballestra continued independently. Desmet then operated as an independent business unit of Alfa Laval's Food & Water Division, with Alfa Laval owning 100 percent of its shares. The business is also described as holding around 70 patents and maintaining innovation centers in Belgium, France and Malaysia. Its present scope covers engineering, process technology and equipment for oilseeds, edible oils and fats, grain, feed, food, rendering, oleochemicals and biofuels.
