Overview
Demant is a Danish international group focused on hearing healthcare, hearing aids, audiological diagnostics, hearing-care retail and selected communications products. Its origins date to 1904, when Hans Demant obtained a hearing aid for his hearing-impaired wife and began selling devices in Odense. The business later developed under the Oticon name and became one of Denmark’s best-known hearing technology enterprises. The company’s activities extend across much of the hearing-care value chain. Its hearing-aid portfolio has included Oticon, Bernafon, Sonic and Philips-branded hearing solutions. Its retail operations include networks such as Audika, HearingLife, Hidden Hearing and other country-specific businesses. The group also supplies audiometers, tympanometers, diagnostic systems and related equipment through brands including Interacoustics, Maico Diagnostics, Amplivox, Grason-Stadler, MedRx, AudioScan and Inventis. Demant’s corporate history is closely connected with Oticon. During the First and Second World War periods, the company expanded its distribution and began assembling and manufacturing hearing devices in Denmark when imports became difficult. Oticon became the company’s official name in 1943 and subsequently developed an international export and subsidiary network. In 1957, the founding family transferred its shares to a charitable foundation, now known as the William Demant Foundation, whose purposes include supporting people with hearing impairment. The group broadened substantially from the 1980s onward. Oticon Holding A/S was established in 1983, and under Lars Kolind the company became known for an unconventional project-based management model sometimes called the “spaghetti organisation.” International expansion and acquisitions added hearing-aid, diagnostics and retail capabilities. The purchase of Bernafon and Maico helped establish a broader technology platform, while later acquisitions such as Interacoustics, Amplivox and Grason-Stadler strengthened diagnostics. William Demant Holding was listed in Copenhagen in 1995 and adopted that corporate name in 1997 to distinguish the group from the Oticon operating brand. Niels Jacobsen became president and chief executive in 1998 and led the group for many years. In the 2000s and 2010s, Demant expanded into office and gaming headsets through its Sennheiser joint venture, later operating the business under the EPOS brand. It also entered hearing implants through Neurelec and Oticon Medical, while expanding hearing-care retail through the acquisition of a majority stake in Audika. The group changed its name from William Demant Holding to Demant in 2019. This reflected a group-wide brand strategy intended to make cooperation across the businesses more visible while retaining established customer-facing brands. Demant later agreed to sell Oticon Medical’s cochlear-implant business to Cochlear; the transaction closed in 2024, marking a retreat from cochlear implants while other hearing-care and technology activities remained in the group. In 2024, Demant also announced that it was seeking a more suitable owner for EPOS. The group continued its retail expansion in China through the acquisition of ShengWang and its clinic network, and in 2025 announced the acquisition of Germany’s KIND Group. Today, Demant is best understood as a multi-brand hearing healthcare group rather than a single consumer-product label. Its principal businesses combine hearing instruments, professional diagnostics, retail audiology and related communications technology. The William Demant Foundation remains a significant long-term shareholder and philanthropic institution associated with the company.
History
Demant traces its beginnings to 1904, when Hans Demant purchased a hearing aid for his wife and entered the hearing-aid trade in Odense, Denmark. He secured a relationship with the American General Acousticon Company and began selling Acousticon devices. After his death in 1910, his widow Camilla and son William Demant continued the business. William expanded distribution into Finland and Russia and later travelled to Russia with his wife, Ida Emilie Høst, to develop sales. The company moved from distribution toward local assembly and production. William obtained a licence to produce hearing aids and introduced the Acousticus trademark. During the Second World War, imports from the United States, Britain and France became difficult, encouraging the company to manufacture components and assemble devices in Denmark. Oticon became the official company name in 1943. After the war, Danish hearing-aid manufacturing grew rapidly and Oticon developed an export business, including cooperation with American manufacturer Charles Lehman through the American-Danish Oticon Corporation. A major ownership transition occurred in 1957, when William Demant and Ida Emilie Høst donated the family’s shares to the William Demant and Ida Emilie Foundation, later known as the Oticon Foundation and now the William Demant Foundation. The foundation’s charitable mission has a particular emphasis on people with hearing impairment. During the 1960s, Oticon established subsidiaries and production or research activities in several European countries, the United States and other international markets. Eriksholm became an important research centre, and Oticon grew into a leading hearing-aid supplier. Oticon Holding A/S was formed in 1983. During Lars Kolind’s leadership, the company introduced a highly decentralised project structure and promoted the idea of challenging conventional assumptions. This organisational experiment became associated with the term “spaghetti organisation.” The group also continued international expansion and acquired Bernafon, a Swiss hearing-aid manufacturer, together with Maico, a diagnostics-equipment business. These moves helped create a group with both hearing instruments and professional diagnostic products. The company was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in 1995. In 1997, Oticon Holding A/S changed its name to William Demant Holding A/S so that the corporate group would not be confused with the Oticon operating brand. Niels Jacobsen became president and chief executive in 1998. During the following decade, the group acquired Interacoustics and later Amplivox and Grason-Stadler, building a major diagnostics platform. In 2003, it formed a joint venture with Sennheiser electronic for office and gaming headsets. The group moved its headquarters to Smørum in 2005. In the 2010s, William Demant Holding expanded into additional hearing-aid brands, retail, hearing implants and communications. The acquisition of Sonic added another hearing-aid brand, while Neurelec brought cochlear implants into the group and was subsequently rebranded as Oticon Medical. A majority stake in French hearing-care retailer Audika broadened the retail business. In 2017, Niels Jacobsen announced his departure as group CEO and Søren Nielsen succeeded him. In 2018, Demant and Sennheiser ended their headset joint venture; the communications and gaming activities continued under the fully owned EPOS brand. A partnership with Philips also added Philips-branded hearing solutions to the group’s market offering. In 2019, William Demant Holding adopted the name Demant A/S and launched a group brand strategy intended to improve cooperation across its businesses. In 2022, Demant agreed to sell Oticon Medical to Cochlear, and the transaction closed in 2024. The company thereby exited the cochlear-implant business while retaining its central hearing-aid, diagnostics and hearing-care operations. Demant also announced a search for a new owner for EPOS and acquired ShengWang’s Chinese clinic network. In 2025, the group announced the acquisition of Germany’s KIND Group. Demant therefore remains a diversified hearing healthcare company built around technology brands, diagnostic equipment and international hearing-care services.
