Overview
DDOR Novi Sad is a Serbian insurance company headquartered in Novi Sad. Its business is focused on insurance products for individuals, households, motorists, businesses and other commercial customers, with offerings spanning non-life insurance and life insurance. The company is one of Serbia's established insurers and has traditionally been particularly significant in the non-life market. The company's institutional roots date to the postwar reorganization of insurance in Yugoslavia. In 1945, the government established the National Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau. Two offices were operating in Novi Sad by 1950 as branches of that organization. When the National Insurance Bureau was dissolved at the end of 1961, its local structure was reorganized into insurance bureaus. The municipality of Novi Sad then established the Novi Sad Insurance Bureau, which became the legal successor to the former local National Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau operations. A second Novi Sad insurer, Vojvodina Insurance Bureau, was established in 1968. The two local organizations merged in 1981, creating the institutional basis for the modern DDOR Novi Sad business. On 25 June 1990, DDOR Novi Sad became the first joint-stock insurance company in the territory of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This conversion marked an important step in the modernization and corporatization of the insurance sector before the breakup of Yugoslavia. Ownership changed substantially during Serbia's privatization process. On 26 July 2006, the Serbian privatization authorities began the sale of the state's stake in DDOR Novi Sad. On 26 November 2007, the sale of the entire state holding to the Italian insurer Fondiaria-Sai was announced for €264 million. Fondiaria-Sai later became part of UnipolSai, and DDOR Novi Sad was fully owned by UnipolSai by February 2018. DDOR's portfolio includes motor insurance, property and household coverage, commercial insurance and life insurance. Its role in the Serbian market has been measured primarily through premium income and market share. In 2016, it accounted for 14.1% of Serbian non-life premium income and 11.6% of the total insurance market, making it the country's third-largest insurance company by market share at that time. The company operates as a locally established Serbian insurer within the wider UnipolSai and Unipol corporate structure.
History
DDOR Novi Sad traces its origins to the postwar creation of a state insurance structure in Yugoslavia. In 1945, the government founded the National Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau. Two offices were established in Novi Sad by 1950 and operated as local branches. At the end of 1961, the National Insurance Bureau was dissolved as the insurance system was reorganized. Existing local branches became insurance bureaus, while additional bureaus were created to serve individual municipalities or groups of municipalities. In this reorganization, the municipality of Novi Sad established the Novi Sad Insurance Bureau. The organization operated within the municipality's territory and was regarded as the legal successor to the former local National Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau offices. A separate insurance organization, Vojvodina Insurance Bureau, was founded in Novi Sad in 1968. The two organizations continued separately until they merged in 1981, consolidating important insurance operations in the city and forming the institutional foundation of DDOR Novi Sad. A major corporate milestone came on 25 June 1990, when DDOR Novi Sad became the first joint-stock insurance company in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The change occurred during a period in which the region's insurance institutions were moving away from the earlier socialist administrative model toward commercial corporate structures. The company later became part of Serbia's privatization program. On 26 July 2006, the state privatization office commenced the process of selling the government's shares in DDOR Novi Sad. On 26 November 2007, authorities announced that 100% of the state's stake had been sold to Fondiaria-Sai, an Italian insurance company, for €264 million. Through subsequent changes in the Italian insurance sector, Fondiaria-Sai became part of UnipolSai. By February 2018, DDOR Novi Sad was fully owned by UnipolSai. The modern company operates in Serbia as a multi-line insurer. Its products serve private customers through motor, household, property and life insurance, while its commercial portfolio addresses business and other institutional risks. The company has also remained a substantial participant in Serbian non-life insurance. In 2016, it held 14.1% of non-life premium income and 11.6% of the overall insurance market in Serbia, ranking third nationally by market share at that time.
