Overview

Daseke is an American transportation group specializing in flatbed and other forms of specialized freight hauling. Rather than operating as a single standardized trucking brand, it has historically functioned as a portfolio of operating companies, each retaining its own market identity, equipment expertise, customer relationships, and regional focus. The group serves freight categories that are often more difficult to move than ordinary dry-van cargo, including steel, building materials, machinery, aviation components, energy equipment, oversized industrial loads, glass, military cargo, and other high-value or time-sensitive shipments. The company’s expansion was led by Don Daseke, who began building the group through acquisitions in the late 2000s. Smokey Point Distributing joined in 2008 and provided a platform in aviation-related, oversized, and specialized freight. E. W. Wylie followed in 2011, strengthening the group’s cross-border and high-value flatbed capabilities. In 2013, Daseke added J. Grady Randolph, Central Oregon Truck Company, and the Boyd Companies. These transactions broadened its geographic coverage and added open-deck, regional, long-haul, logistics, and owner-operator capabilities. Daseke continued its acquisition-led strategy in 2014 and 2015 with Lone Star Transportation, Bulldog Hiway Express, and Hornady Transportation. The portfolio expanded further in 2017 through the additions of Big Freight Systems, the Schilli Companies, the Steelman Companies, the Roadmaster Group, TSH & Co., and Moore Freight Service. These businesses brought Canadian transportation and warehousing, specialized logistics, high-security arms and explosives transportation, steel hauling, and flat-glass freight expertise. In 2018, Aveda Transportation and Energy Services and Builders Transportation Co. added oilfield transportation, energy equipment hauling, and traditional flatbed capacity. The group’s operating companies collectively cover standard and specialized flatbed work, step-deck and lowboy hauling, retractable-curtain equipment, oversized and over-dimensional freight, intermodal and port delivery, brokerage, warehousing, distribution, and project logistics. Its customers and cargo sectors have included construction, steel, building products, aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, oil and gas, industrial manufacturing, defense-related transportation, and other heavy industries. The business model emphasizes specialized equipment, experienced drivers, regulatory capability, and the ability to coordinate complex loads across a broad network. Daseke became a publicly traded company on Nasdaq under the ticker DSKE in February 2017. Public ownership supported the group’s acquisition program but also exposed it to the cyclical conditions affecting freight demand, driver availability, fuel costs, equipment costs, and trucking rates. In December 2023, TFI International announced an agreement to acquire Daseke for approximately $1.1 billion. The transaction closed on April 1, 2024, making Daseke a subsidiary of the Canadian transportation company. Following the acquisition, Daseke remains an operating group with a large U.S. and Canadian specialized-carrier footprint rather than an independent public issuer.

History

Daseke developed as an acquisition-led specialized transportation platform. Don Daseke began expanding the business in 2008 with the purchase of Smokey Point Distributing, a carrier known for moving large, cumbersome, aviation-related, and other specialized cargo. The transaction established the pattern that would define the group: assembling established carriers with distinct operating expertise rather than eliminating their individual market identities. E. W. Wylie joined on December 29, 2011. Its capabilities included high-value and over-dimensional freight, as well as a significant Canadian business presence. In 2013, Daseke added J. Grady Randolph, a long-established South Carolina carrier focused on over-dimensional flatbed cargo, and Central Oregon Truck Company, which provided long-haul and regional flatbed services in the United States and Canada. Later that year, Daseke merged with the Boyd Companies, bringing Boyd Bros. Transportation, WTI Transport, Mid Seven Transportation, and Boyd Logistics into the group. This combination added high-volume flatbed service, owner-operator capacity, open-deck freight, and logistics-network capabilities. Lone Star Transportation joined on October 1, 2014. Based in Fort Worth, Lone Star expanded Daseke’s project and time-sensitive freight capabilities, including aerospace components, wind-energy equipment, construction materials, and heavy machinery. In 2015, Bulldog Hiway Express and Hornady Transportation joined the portfolio. Bulldog contributed heavy-haul and intermodal-port expertise, while Hornady added experience serving steel and building-products customers. The group’s expansion accelerated in 2017. Big Freight Systems became Daseke’s first Canadian acquisition, supplying transportation, logistics, and warehousing services across Canada and into the United States. The Schilli Companies joined at the same time, adding transportation, specialized freight, distribution, warehousing, and leasing-related capabilities. The Steelman Companies followed in July, broadening the group’s standard flatbed, oversized-load, equipment, brokerage, and logistics services. In December, Daseke added the Roadmaster Group, TSH & Co., and Moore Freight Service. These businesses diversified the portfolio into high-security military-related transportation, steel and industrial-material hauling, and flat-glass transportation. Daseke became publicly traded on Nasdaq on February 28, 2017, using the ticker DSKE. Public listing gave the group access to equity-market visibility and capital during its consolidation of the specialized-carrier sector. However, the business remained exposed to the normal operating pressures of trucking, including freight-cycle volatility, equipment costs, fuel prices, driver recruitment, utilization, and pricing conditions. In 2018, Daseke acquired Aveda Transportation and Energy Services and Builders Transportation Co. Aveda specialized in transportation and equipment services for petroleum exploration, development, and production in the United States and Canada, including the movement of large oil rigs and worksite equipment. Builders added a substantial traditional flatbed fleet serving steel, aluminum, building materials, pipe, machinery, and related products across the contiguous United States. The company also made senior leadership changes during this period. Bharat Mahajan was appointed chief financial officer in 2018, and Chris Easter was announced as chief operating officer in early 2019. By this point, Daseke’s network comprised numerous specialized carriers and associated logistics operations, with more than 5,200 trucks and more than 11,000 flatbed and specialized trailers cited in reference material. In December 2023, TFI International announced an agreement to acquire Daseke for approximately $1.1 billion. The transaction closed on April 1, 2024. Daseke consequently became a subsidiary of TFI International, and its former Nasdaq-listed identity ceased to represent an independent public company. The Daseke platform continues to represent a broad collection of specialized transportation operations serving industrial, construction, energy, aerospace, defense-related, agricultural, and commercial freight markets.

Products and positioning

A diversified specialized-carrier platform serving complex, oversized, high-value, heavy, and industrial freight markets through a network of operating companies.

  • Freight transportation

    Flatbed and open-deck transportation

Daseke’s core offering is the movement of freight that is too large, heavy, tall, long, or irregular for enclosed-van equipment. Its operating companies use conventional flatbeds, step decks, extendable trailers, lowboys, double drops, and related open-deck equipment to transport steel, building products, machinery, pipe, aluminum, and industrial components across the United States and Canada.

  • Project logistics

    Specialized and over-dimensional freight

The business is designed for freight that demands heavy-haul equipment and industry-specific operating knowledge.

  • Secure freight transportation · 2017

    High-security transportation

The Roadmaster Group provides specialized transportation for arms, ammunition, explosives, and other high-security cargo. Its Tri-State Motor Transit operation is identified in reference material as a long-established U.S. munitions transporter. This segment requires extensive security procedures, regulatory compliance, controlled handling, and specialized operational planning.

  • Logistics services

    Warehousing, distribution, and brokerage

Several Daseke companies provide services beyond asset-based trucking, including freight brokerage, supply-chain coordination, warehousing, distribution-center operations, and logistics management. The Schilli Companies and Boyd Logistics are particularly associated with these capabilities, enabling Daseke to combine transportation assets with third-party carrier networks and storage or distribution services.
