Overview
Damiani Group is an Italian luxury jewelry corporate group whose roots are in Valenza, one of Italy’s historic centers of fine jewelry production. Founded in 1924 by Enrico Grassi Damiani, the business developed from a family workshop serving affluent Italian clients into an international group involved in the design, manufacture, distribution and retailing of jewelry and luxury watches. Its identity combines Italian craftsmanship, precious materials, controlled production and a strong emphasis on distinctive design. The company remained under family leadership across successive generations. Enrico Damiani’s son directed the business from 1960 to 1990, and the third generation subsequently took a prominent role in governance. Under this family stewardship, Damiani expanded beyond its domestic base. It entered the United States market in 2001, supported international promotion with a major advertising campaign in 2002, and developed a network of boutiques, single-brand stores, franchises, subsidiaries and external retail partnerships across Europe, Asia and North America. Damiani Group operates a portfolio of jewelry brands rather than relying solely on the Damiani name. The principal brands associated with the group include Damiani, Salvini, Alfieri & St. John, Bliss and Calderoni. The portfolio spans high jewelry, bridal and wedding jewelry, everyday luxury pieces, watches and special or one-off creations. The company has also operated through Rocca, an Italian jewelry and watch retailer acquired in 2008. Distribution has included partnerships in the United States, China, Japan and India, reflecting the group’s effort to combine directly controlled retail with local market expertise. Celebrity association and high-visibility product placement have been important parts of Damiani’s marketing model. The group has worked with personalities including Isabella Rossellini, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and has produced notable pieces for entertainment and fashion contexts. Examples include jewelry created for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and the elaborate Harlequin Fantasy Bra presented at the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. These projects reinforced Damiani’s positioning as a design-led luxury house capable of producing technically complex, publicity-generating pieces. The group became publicly traded in 2007. Its later corporate history included an acquisition of Rocca, international distribution agreements, entry into the Indian market through Damiani India and a strategic relationship with AC Milan. In 2018, the family holding company Leading Jewels announced plans to acquire the shares it did not already hold. A takeover offer in 2019 resulted in ownership exceeding 96 percent, followed by the company’s delisting and return to family control. Damiani marks its heritage through awards, craftsmanship claims and anniversary programs. The group has stated that its suppliers belong to a restricted network that follows United Nations-related requirements concerning the certification and origin of conflict-free diamonds. In 2024, it celebrated its centenary with a Milan gala and the exhibition “100x100 Italiani,” presenting 100 pieces connected with the company’s Italian identity and history. The group’s current positioning remains that of an Italian luxury jewelry house with an international retail and brand portfolio.
History
Damiani Group originated in 1924 when Enrico Grassi Damiani established a jewelry business in Valenza, Italy. Valenza’s specialist manufacturing tradition gave the company access to skilled artisans and an established luxury-goods ecosystem. Damiani initially built its reputation among affluent Italian customers, with the business remaining closely associated with family management and Italian production. The founder’s son led the company from 1960 to 1990. During this period, Damiani consolidated its reputation as a jeweler serving the Italian market. The third generation later joined the board, with the family continuing to influence the company’s strategic direction. Over time, the business expanded beyond a single jewelry label and developed a portfolio that included Salvini, Alfieri & St. John, Bliss and Calderoni, alongside the core Damiani brand. Internationalization accelerated in the early twenty-first century. Damiani began selling in the United States in 2001 and followed that market entry with a substantial advertising campaign in 2002. The group also used celebrity endorsements and collaborations to generate international visibility. A highly publicized dispute involving Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston concerned the alleged reproduction and promotion of their wedding-ring designs. The parties reached a settlement in January 2002; as part of the resolution, Pitt designed a ring for Damiani and Aniston participated in its advertising. By 2003, Damiani had approximately 25 stores in Italy, Asia and the United States, with stores organized around individual brands. The company continued to combine its own boutiques with franchise relationships, subsidiaries and third-party distribution. In 2007, it entered the public markets through an initial public offering. In 2008, it acquired Rocca, an Italian retailer specializing in jewelry and watches, strengthening its presence in luxury retail. The group pursued further international development during the 2010s. Birks & Mayors agreed to distribute its brands in the United States in 2010. In 2012, Damiani formed a partnership with MingFung/Hengdeli for distribution in China and obtained authorization to invest in India. Damiani India was established with the group permitted to hold a 51 percent controlling interest, an important step in the company’s expansion into the Indian jewelry market. Damiani also continued to use cultural, entertainment and celebrity projects as brand-building tools. Its work included the Aro necklace for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and the 2009 Harlequin Fantasy Bra for Victoria’s Secret. The group’s celebrity-linked creations and advertising helped present its jewelry as both traditionally crafted and relevant to contemporary popular culture. In 2013, Damiani and Rocca stores supported Italian Red Cross fundraising for people affected by storms in Sardinia. In 2018, the group became a luxury partner of AC Milan. That same year, Leading Jewels, the family holding company, announced plans to purchase remaining shares and delist Damiani. A takeover bid followed in January 2019. After ownership exceeded 96 percent, the bidder exercised its purchase right, and Damiani returned to family ownership as a private company. The group celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2024. A gala at Milan’s Teatro Alcione brought together prominent cultural and entertainment figures, while the “100x100 Italiani” exhibition at Gallerie d’Italia presented 100 pieces associated with the centenary. Damiani’s modern activities remain focused on the design, manufacture, distribution and sale of jewelry and luxury watches through its own brands, boutiques, retail partners and international operations.
