The CSS Group consists of CSS Holding AG and its subsidiaries; CSS Holding AG is not listed on the stock exchange and is subject to Swiss company law, with the CSS Association as its sole shareholder. Its companies offering basic and supplementary insurance include CSS Health Insurance Ltd (mandatory health insurance/basic insurance), CSS Insurance Ltd (supplementary insurance) and CSS Life Insurance Ltd (life insurance). CSS states it can look back on over 125 years of experience and was originally founded as a self-help organisation. The css.ch website is operated by CSS Kranken-Versicherung AG and is aimed exclusively at users resident in Switzerland.

In the supplementary insurance business, INTRAS Versicherung AG merged with CSS Versicherung AG. Arcosana AG merged with CSS Kranken-Versicherung AG as of 1 January 2023.
