Overview

The Croatian Archaeological Society (Croatian: Hrvatsko arheološko društvo, HAD) is a voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit professional, scientific and cultural archaeological association founded by Croatian archaeologists for the benefit of archaeological heritage, the profession and science in the Republic of Croatia, without the intention of acquiring profit or other economically assessable benefits. It is one of the oldest continuously existing archaeological organizations in Croatia, with roots in the nineteenth-century national revival. The Society was founded in 1878, after the cessation of the activities of the Družtvo za jugoslavensku poviest i starine (Society for Yugoslav History and Antiquities). At that time it limited its activities to archaeology and changed its name to Hrvatsko arkeologičko družtvo. Its first president was Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski, with don Šime Ljubić as vice-president and Izidor Kršnjavi as secretary. Ljubić, the conceptual and actual founder, soon took over the presidency. In 1879 the Society launched Viestnik Hrvatskoga arkeologičkoga družtva (from 1896 Vjesnik Hrvatskog arheološkog društva, from 1958 Vjesnik Arheološkog muzeja u Zagrebu), a professional journal whose first editor was Š. Ljubić and which also served as the bulletin of the National Archaeological-Historical and Prehistoric Museum (later the Archaeological Museum). In the mid-twentieth century the Society's activities were limited to those of the Archaeological Society of Yugoslavia. In line with the social changes of the time, the activities of the Croatian Archaeological Society were revitalized in Zagreb in 1967. It first operated within the then-active Union of Archaeological Societies of Yugoslavia, and later as an independent entity. Since then the Society has organized annual professional and scientific conferences and has carried out publishing activities, especially Obavijesti Hrvatskog arheološkog društva (since 1969, three volumes per year) and the series Izdanja Hrvatskog arheološkog društva since 1975. The Society today remains active, organizing conferences, publishing, awarding prizes and maintaining membership. Its website announces a conference in Čakovec with a programme dated 14 October 2026 and a registration deadline of 23 October 2026, with a participation fee of 35 euros (10 euros for lecturers who regularly pay membership dues). It also publishes author guidelines for HAD publications, meeting minutes and reports, annual reports and financial statements, and calls for nominations for its awards. The Society's awards include the "Don Frane Bulić" lifetime achievement award, the annual "Josip Brunšmid" award, the "Don Šime Ljubić" award for contribution to the work of the Society, and the "Fra Lujo Marun" award for achievements in national archaeology.
