Overview
Creatures of Leisure is a surf hardware and accessories company founded by John Malloy, who arrived in Yallingup, Western Australia in 1974 and officially started the brand in 1987, selling leashes and boardcovers made in Yallingup. The brand pioneered the use of urethane cord in surf leashes and invented the stainless-steel bearing swivel, both described as industry standard today. Its product range has expanded to boardcovers, traction pads, tie-downs, dry luggage and other surf essentials, and it remains based in South West WA.
History
John Malloy left Los Angeles in 1972 on a container ship, surfing through the Pacific to Western Australia, and landed in Yallingup, WA in 1974 with a surfboard and a backpack. He began making surf leashes to earn a living, and after experimenting with several leash materials including gas station bell cords, he discovered and introduced urethane to the market in 1976. In 1987 he officially started Creatures of Leisure, selling leashes and boardcovers all made in Yallingup, Western Australia. In 1991 the brand made bodyboard-specific leashes and hardware for the first time, with feedback from team riders. In 1997 it launched traction pads made in Perth, Australia with the original Square-Loc pattern, and in 1998 produced its first signature team pads. In 2002 Mick Fanning's first signature pad was released, becoming the most successful pad in Creatures history. In 2003 John invented a long-lasting stainless-steel bearing swivel with acetal plastic that remains industry standard. In 2006 the brand created boardcovers with a Slim-Fit design. The brand remains based in South West WA, and its founder's story is told in the documentary A Creature of Leisure, narrated by Steph Gilmore.
