Overview
The Metz Covered Market (French: Marché Couvert de Metz) is a historic market with permanent stalls and shops in a large covered structure in the historical centre of Metz, capital of the Lorraine region in France. It is one of the oldest and most grandiose covered markets in France and is home to traditional local food producers and retailers. The market occupies a neo-Classical, U-shaped building extending over 5,000 m2 (54,000 sq ft), located adjacent to the Metz Cathedral forecourt. Its origins lie in an episcopal palace commissioned in 1762 by the Bishop of Metz from the royal architect Jacques-François Blondel as part of a larger urban renovation during the Age of Enlightenment. Construction began in 1785 but was halted by the French Revolution in 1789, and the incomplete building stood vacant until 1821, when the municipality of Metz bought it. The Messin architect Pierre-Sylvestre Jaunez then reconfigured the building to install a municipal covered market within its walls. The market encompasses over 40 shops and is home to numerous traders, mostly food retailers including greengrocers, butchers, cheesemakers, and wine dealers. There are also traditional market shops selling fresh, local food such as quiche, potée Lorraine, and pâté lorrain. The backyard, known as the Chamber's Square (Place de la Chambre), is surrounded by numerous local food restaurants. Since the 1970s, the basement of the edifice has been used as an underground parking lot with 387 parking spaces. Every Saturday morning, the Covered Market is surrounded by a street market held on the Metz Cathedral forecourt.
