Corning Incorporated is a multinational materials-science and technology company headquartered in Corning, New York. Founded in 1851 as Bay State Glass Co., the business moved through several locations before settling in Corning, New York, in 1868. For much of its history it operated as Corning Glass Works, supplying glass for lighting, television, scientific instruments, consumer cookware, and other industrial applications. The company therefore remains focused principally on industrial and technology markets. Several technical breakthroughs shaped Corning’s modern profile. In the 1930s it produced the low-expansion glass mirror blank for the 200-inch Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory. In the late 1960s and 1970s, its work on chemically strengthened glass and low-loss optical fiber created capabilities that later supported display and telecommunications businesses. Corning’s optical-fiber research demonstrated that suitably doped silica could transmit light over long distances with sufficiently low attenuation for practical telecommunications networks. Gorilla Glass, a thin, toughened alkali-aluminosilicate glass, became one of the company’s most recognizable contemporary technologies. Developed from earlier Chemcor research, it was selected for the original iPhone in 2007 and subsequently used by numerous smartphone, tablet, watch, and other electronics manufacturers. Corning also supplies glass substrates for display panels and develops glass for OLED, LCD, semiconductor, aerospace, and scientific applications. The company experienced severe financial pressure after expanding aggressively during the late-1990s telecommunications boom. The collapse of the dot-com economy and weak demand for optical-network equipment led to a sharp contraction in its market value. Corning later recovered through restructuring, renewed investment in research, and a portfolio centered on specialty materials and communications infrastructure. Its major operating areas have included Display Technologies, Optical Communications, Environmental Technologies, Life Sciences, and Specialty Materials. History
Corning’s origins date to 1851, when Amory Houghton Sr. and partners established Bay State Glass Company in Somerville, Massachusetts. The enterprise later moved to Brooklyn and operated as Brooklyn Flint Glass Works before relocating to Corning, New York, in 1868. The new location provided access to transportation, fuel, labor, and expanding industrial markets, and the company adopted the Corning name as its permanent identity. The business grew through technical glassmaking rather than dependence on a single consumer category. It developed glass for lamps, scientific instruments, optical systems, laboratory use, and industrial equipment. In the early twentieth century, Corning pursued improved glass compositions and manufacturing processes, including ribbon-forming technology that increased production efficiency. Its work on large optical blanks also demonstrated an ability to manufacture glass at scales required by astronomy and national scientific projects. Consumer recognition expanded through Pyrex, introduced as heat-resistant borosilicate glassware and promoted for cooking and laboratory applications. When Pyrex sales slowed in the 1920s, Corning’s research with J. Walter Thompson identified price and product positioning as important barriers. The resulting everyday-use assortments helped make Pyrex more accessible. Corning later extended its household portfolio through CorningWare, a glass-ceramic cookware line; Visions, a transparent glass-ceramic cookware range; and Corelle, a lightweight Vitrelle tableware product. After the Second World War, Corning continued to diversify into electronics, telecommunications, optical products, ceramics, and medical and laboratory technologies. Its overflow-fusion process became important to the manufacture of flat glass, while later research supported display technologies. In 1972, the company developed a ceramic honeycomb substrate for automotive emissions-control systems, establishing a durable position in environmental technologies. The consumer-products business encountered substantial competition in the 1970s and 1980s. Corning invested in restructuring and refreshed marketing, particularly around Visions and its broader cookware and dinnerware portfolio. At the same time, management increasingly presented the company as a materials and technology business rather than simply a glass manufacturer. This repositioning reflected the growing contribution of industrial, scientific, communications, and electronics activities. Corning changed its name from Corning Glass Works to Corning Incorporated in 1989. The company expanded substantially in optical communications during the telecommunications boom of the late 1990s and completed the spin-offs of Quest Diagnostics and Covance in January 1997.
