Overview

Coriolis (Coriolis Télécom) is a French telecommunications operator and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that has been active for more than 30 years according to its own marketing, with its modern independent corporate form dating to 1999. It sells mobile plans, handsets bundled with plans, and fixed internet (ADSL and fibre) services to both consumers and businesses in France. Its consumer proposition centres on no-commitment mobile plans such as Le Basic, Le Connecté and Le Premium, alongside device-plus-plan bundles featuring Samsung, Apple and other smartphones. It also markets ADSL and FTTH fibre offers, and operates a retail footprint of around 200 stores across France, plus the affiliated "Téléphone Store" banner. Historically, Coriolis was a subsidiary of Vodafone before becoming independent in 1999. It became an MVNO in 2006, initially riding on the Orange and SFR networks, and later using only SFR's network after its acquisition by Altice France. The company has been noted for accessibility innovations, being the first operator to offer plans designed for deaf and hard-of-hearing customers in 2008. It expanded into ADSL in 2012 and into very-high-speed fibre in 2015, including public-initiative FTTH networks in Calvados and Essonne, in partnership with Canal+. Coriolis serves both the general public and professionals, with a substantial B2B business covering tens of thousands of enterprise customers. It also provides customer-service management for third parties. In September 2021, Altice France signed an exclusivity agreement to acquire Coriolis Télécom for 415 million euros, consolidating the operator within the SFR/Altice group. The brand continues to operate as a French telecom provider with nationwide 4G/5G coverage via its host network.

History

Coriolis Télécom is a French mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) created in 1999. Formerly a subsidiary of Vodafone, it became independent in 1999. Initially present on the Orange and SFR networks, the operator later used only SFR's network following its acquisition by Altice France. It serves both professionals and the general public and has around 500,000 customers. In 2006, Coriolis became an MVNO. In 2008, it was the first operator to offer plans designed for deaf and hard-of-hearing users, including 2 hours of video calls and mobile internet; at that time it had 400,000 customers and 250,000 mobile customers. In 2012, Coriolis launched ADSL offers. In 2015, it acquired MyStream, a French SME specialising in IP networks, and entered the very-high-speed broadband market. In September 2015, it experimented with broadcasting in Calvados in partnership with Canal+. The company does not own its own network. Its activity is limited to around 300 million euros, half in the professional segment where it holds 70,000 business customers. On 11 January 2016, Coriolis expressed interest in the enterprise activities of Bouygues Telecom, an asset that Orange — a possible buyer — wanted to divest; this asset comprised about 1.7 million professional customers and 800 employees (2014 figures) for 700 million euros of activity (enterprises and small artisans). In 2016, Coriolis Télécom was interested in acquiring assets of Bouygues Telecom. In May 2016, Coriolis Télécom and the Canal+ group launched a new triple-play FTTH fibre offer in Calvados and Essonne, in the territories of Cœur d'Essonne Agglomération and the Communauté Paris Saclay. In December 2016, Canal+ offers became available throughout France. In December 2020, Coriolis Télécom launched its Coriolis Box fibre offers on SFR's FTTH network. On 20 September 2021, Altice France signed an exclusivity agreement with the Coriolis group to become its owner, for 415 million euros. Following the acquisition of SFR, Orange planned to integrate Coriolis Télécom's employees into its workforce. Coriolis also provides fixed telephony and ADSL access services to businesses by reselling communication minutes from various operators. Since 2012, Coriolis has provided ADSL access services to individuals. In 2016, Coriolis launched its first FTTH fibre offers to individuals in Essonne and Calvados. It is also a customer-service manager for third parties and holds the "Téléphone Store" banner, grouping 300 affiliated stores. Coriolis is a member of the Syndicat des professionnels des centres de contacts.
