Overview

The Convention de la Société Civile Ivoirienne (CSCI) is a national coalition of Ivorian civil-society organisations created in January 2003, initially by the Ligue ivoirienne des droits de l'homme in response to the politico-military crisis that began in Côte d'Ivoire in October 2002. It was strengthened in 2005 to represent the whole of Ivorian citizens. Its stated purpose is to involve the country's active forces in Côte d'Ivoire's objectives and to unite Ivorians around the national project. Since 15 February 2008 the CSCI has had a 38-article charter defining its composition and functioning. It brings together organisations representing the Ivorian people, including trade unions, NGOs, political parties, traditional chieftaincies and religious organisations, and comprises 132 national structures in total. Its mission is to rebuild Côte d'Ivoire, establish a new social contract, ensure political stability and participatory democracy, and put in place an economic development contract. Its official slogan is « Agir ensemble et bâtir durablement » (Act together and build sustainably). The coordinator of the CSCI is Patrick N'Gouan. The organisation is active in civic observation and public advocacy. Its website publishes declarations and communiqués, including a preliminary declaration of its observation mission for the legislative elections of 6 March 2021 in Côte d'Ivoire, a press conference of 14 April 2021 on the implementation of the recommendations of the political dialogue, and recommendations and motions from its 3rd National Days (JCN) of 19 October 2021. It also implements projects such as FORUS, including an action plan for the development and operationalisation of CSCI policies and strategies, and a strategic partnership with FORUS to strengthen the capacities of Ivorian civil society. Other project communications include Projet BINKADI and capacity-building workshops for member organisations.
