Overview

Contship Italia Group describes itself as an integrator of containerised logistics, offering intelligent and sustainable port-to-door solutions. Its offering spans integrated solutions, intermodal logistics (intermodal, truck and rail), port logistics through a network of maritime terminals, and supply chain services such as customs processes and warehousing. The group states that it connects the world with Europe and all Mediterranean countries, and that its strength lies in the direct management of its assets. It is part of Eurokai GmbH & Co. History

Contship was founded in 1969 by Angelo Ravano, who transformed family vessels into container ships and combined the words “container” and “shipping” to name the company. In 1971 the company established the first private container terminal in Italy, La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT). In 1990, Sogemar merged with Intermodale Italia, creating the largest intermodal network in Italy. In 1992, Cecilia Ecklemann Battistello, described as the only woman in senior management at that time and one of the few in the industry, proposed an unusual approach. Contship is part of Eurokai GmbH & Co. KGaA, a company listed on the German stock market which controls the largest container terminal network in Europe.
