History

Continental Aerospace Technologies traces its roots back to the earliest aviators. The company's first Continental factory opened in 1905. It has introduced turbocharging and fuel injection in general aviation, powered the first solo flight around the world by a woman, and was the first to equip aviation engines with FADEC. In 1905, the Continental Motors Manufacturing Company was created in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1929, the A-70 radial, seven-cylinder engine was introduced. In 1930, the A-40 four-cylinder engine was introduced to aircraft. In 1936, the W-670 radial was developed. In 1938, the A-50 was added to the lineup to power the Piper Cub and Taylorcraft. In 1940, the A-65 engine was developed and widely used for the Grasshopper fleet. In 1945, the six-cylinder E-185 was developed for the Beechcraft Bonanza. In 1946, post-war, the light plane industry expanded rapidly; Continental sold 34,358 engines. In the 1950s, the 100-horsepower O-200-A powered the Cessna 150. In 1954, the O-300-A, successor to the C-145, powered many aircraft, including Cessna, Taylorcraft, and Aeronca. In the 1960s, turbocharging and fuel-injection were brought to general aviation.
