Overview

Contemporary Amperex Brunp EU is the European battery-recycling and circular-materials arm of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world's leading zero-carbon new-energy technology company. The entity combines CATL's global battery-manufacturing scale with the recycling and material-regeneration capabilities of Brunp Recycling (邦普循环), which CATL acquired in 2015 to build out a battery-recycling and reproduction value chain. Its purpose is to recover end-of-life and manufacturing-scrap lithium-ion batteries in Europe and return the recovered nickel, cobalt, manganese, lithium and other materials into new battery production, supporting CATL's circular-economy and carbon-neutrality strategy. CATL describes itself as a global leader in zero-carbon new-energy technology, providing first-class solutions and services for global new-energy applications and pursuing an all-domain incremental strategy to build a zero-carbon energy ecosystem. Its business spans passenger-vehicle, commercial-vehicle, two-wheeler, port, construction-machinery, rail and marine electrification, plus energy-storage systems and battery swapping. Recycling is presented on CATL's own website as one of its industry applications (循环回收), and the company's history records the 2015 acquisition of Brunp Recycling as the step that established its battery-recycling and reproduction industrial chain. In Europe, the Brunp EU operation is positioned to serve the fast-growing European EV and energy-storage markets, where CATL already supplies major automakers and operates manufacturing and R&D footprints in Germany, France and other countries. Local recycling capacity helps CATL and its customers comply with European battery-regulation requirements for recycled content, collection and recovery, while reducing reliance on virgin mined materials and lowering the carbon footprint of battery supply chains. As a subsidiary within the CATL group, Contemporary Amperex Brunp EU is not separately listed; CATL itself is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (300750) and, since 2025, on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (03750.HK), giving it an A+H global capital platform. The recycling arm is therefore best understood as a strategic, sustainability-driven extension of CATL's core battery business rather than a standalone consumer brand.

History

The roots of Contemporary Amperex Brunp EU lie in two strands of CATL's history: the founding of CATL itself and the creation of its recycling business through Brunp. CATL's founding team first built ATL in 1999 into a global leader in consumer lithium-ion batteries. In 2011 the same founding team started a second venture, establishing Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Ningde, Fujian. CATL quickly moved into automotive batteries, and in 2012 it entered a strategic partnership with Germany's BMW Group, becoming a core supplier of power batteries. In 2013 it built the Xining base and developed bus power batteries for Yutong, described as the world's largest bus manufacturer. In 2014 CATL set up a wholly owned subsidiary in Germany, its first European footprint. The recycling dimension began in 2015, when CATL acquired Brunp Recycling (邦普循环), explicitly to lay out a battery-recycling and reproduction industrial chain. This acquisition is the direct origin of the Brunp business that the European entity extends. In the years that followed, CATL expanded globally: in 2017 it established wholly owned subsidiaries in France, the United States, Canada and Japan, and formed a joint venture with SAIC Motor. In 2018 CATL listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange under the code 300750. Through the 2020s CATL deepened both its technology and its sustainability agenda. It set up the 21C Innovation Laboratory in Fujian in 2020, established a national engineering research center for electrochemical energy-storage technology in 2019, and in 2023 published a zero-carbon strategy targeting core-operations carbon neutrality by 2025 and value-chain carbon neutrality by 2035. Recycling and circular materials are integral to that value-chain goal, since recovered materials reduce the lifecycle emissions of batteries. CATL's European presence also grew substantially, with manufacturing and R&D centers across Germany, France and other markets, and supply relationships with major European automakers. As European regulators introduced battery rules requiring collection, recovery and recycled content, a dedicated European recycling operation became strategically necessary. Contemporary Amperex Brunp EU represents the localization of CATL's Brunp recycling and material-regeneration capabilities in Europe, intended to collect and process end-of-life and scrap batteries close to where they are used and to feed recovered materials back into CATL's European battery supply chain. In 2025 CATL listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (03750.HK), building an A+H global capital platform, and reported that its power-battery usage ranked first globally for nine consecutive years and its energy-storage battery shipments first globally for five consecutive years. The same year it announced plans to make 20 battery plants worldwide zero-carbon factories and to achieve core-operations carbon neutrality. The European Brunp recycling arm sits within this broader zero-carbon and circularity strategy.
