Overview

The Constantin-Brunner-Stiftung was a cultural foundation based in Hamburg, Germany, established in 1975 by Leo Sonntag (Paris) and Walter Bernard (New York). Its mission was to promote the scholarly research and critical discussion of the life, work, and impact of the German-Jewish philosopher Constantin Brunner (1862–1937). Alongside the older Internationaal Constantin Brunner Instituut (ICBI), the foundation supported reprints of out-of-print works by Brunner, academic projects, and other activities related to his philosophy, primarily through printing subsidies and, in exceptional cases, scholarships. It was led from 1975 to 1993 by the Hamburg literary scholar Heinz Stolte, and from 1993 by Jürgen Stenzel, who also chaired the ICBI, effectively uniting the two foundations in personal union. At the end of 2021, following a change in legal conditions that facilitated cross-border foundation support, the foundation was formally dissolved and its assets were to be transferred to the larger ICBI after a waiting period. The foundation's website, constantinbrunner.net, continues to be operated by the Stichting Internationaal Constantin Brunner Instituut and serves as a resource on Brunner's philosophy, including an antiquarian online bookshop and news about translations and events.

History

The Constantin-Brunner-Stiftung was founded in 1975 by Leo Sonntag in Paris and Walter Bernard in New York. It was based in Hamburg, Germany, and dedicated to the scientific exploration and critical discussion of the life, work, and influence of the German-Jewish philosopher Constantin Brunner (1862–1937). From 1975 to 1993, the foundation was chaired by the Hamburg literary scholar Heinz Stolte. In 1993, Jürgen Stenzel became chairman, a position he held until the foundation's dissolution. Stenzel also chaired the Internationaal Constantin Brunner Instituut (ICBI), a sister organization based in The Hague, Netherlands, which led to the two foundations being run in personal union. The foundation's activities included supporting reprints of out-of-print works by Brunner, funding academic research, and organizing events. Its support was primarily in the form of printing subsidies, with scholarships granted only in exceptional cases. At the end of 2021, following a change in legal conditions that made it easier to support a foundation abroad within Europe, the foundation amended its statutes and formally dissolved itself in order to merge with the larger ICBI. The foundation's capital was to be transferred to the ICBI after a waiting period. The website constantinbrunner.net, originally operated by the ICBI and the Brunner-Stiftung, continues to provide information about Brunner, including an antiquarian online bookshop and updates on new translations and events.
