Overview

N.V. Consolidated Industries Corporation (CIC) is a Surinamese manufacturer of household cleaning and detergent products, headquartered near the southern end of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The company was established in 1967 by 150 shareholders and is publicly traded on the Suriname Stock Exchange (SSX). It is part of the VSH United group of companies, which holds a majority interest. CIC began commercial activities producing and distributing powder detergents for household and industrial use, using initial equipment that included a spray tower, a steam boiler and a box-filling machine. Over the decades it expanded into liquid detergents, insect repellent, plastic packaging materials, cosmetics and fruit-processing products, before a major restructuring in the late 1990s and early 2000s refocused the business on its core cleaning-products operations. Today CIC produces and markets a portfolio of consumer brands: Ozon, its most popular brand, offering a complete line of household cleaning products; Sun, a simple line of basic cleaning products for rooms and laundry; Klinol, its oldest brand, known for multi-purpose use; Supro Extreme; and Tropical Bush. The company also produces other products and plastic packaging. With just over 115 employees, CIC serves customers in Suriname and most regional markets, and its Ozon brand is active in 15 countries. The company has pursued regional expansion, exporting to destinations including Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Jamaica, and by 2017 was exporting to fourteen countries. It has obtained various international certifications and in 2014 was one of the award winners at the KKF annual trade fair for outstanding performance. CIC positions itself as a regional export partner, emphasizing trust, dedication and a win-win mentality. It offers sales, marketing and strategic support to export partners and welcomes new potential partners as it readies itself for further regional expansion. The company invests in research and development and has re-launched and expanded many of its brand portfolios. Its website serves markets across the Caribbean and the Netherlands, with country selectors for Antigua, Barbados, Belize, Curacao, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, the Netherlands, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

History

Consolidated Industries Corporation was founded on 25 November 1967 by 150 shareholders as a producer of washing powder under the brand name Witboi. A few years later, liquid cleaning agents and toothpaste were added, and at the end of the 1970s plastic bottles were introduced. These bottles were produced both for the company's own products and for other manufacturers. The manufacturer responded to the economic recession of the 1980s and the shortage of foreign currency by expanding its product range. In 1982 cosmetics were added, and in 1986 fruit-processing products. From 1987 to 1997 CIC experienced a strong decline in production, with a low point in 1996 when Suriname joined CARICOM and other Caribbean countries entered the Surinamese market. To avoid bankruptcy, the company restructured and modernized until 2002, and introduced the just-in-time principle. Six locations were reduced to one, and non-core activities were divested, such as fruit processing, which was placed in the subsidiary Carifrico. The 150 products were reduced to 75 and the number of packages from 350 to 75; the number of employees shrank from 230 to 144. New capital was acquired through a share issue and replacement investments were made. After this reorganization, CIC acquired a market-leading position and exports began, with Trinidad and Tobago as the first foreign market; Guyana and Jamaica followed later. In 2010 CIC opened two new factories in plastic and liquid products. By 2017 CIC was exporting to fourteen countries. The company also obtained various international certifications. In 2014, due to outstanding performance, it was one of the award winners at the KKF annual trade fair. The manufacturer carries the brands Klinol, Ozon, Sun, Supro Extreme and Tropical Bush. The Verenigde Surinaamse Holdingmij (VSH United) has acquired a majority interest in CIC. According to the company's own website, CIC is situated near the southern end of Paramaribo, was established in 1967, and is part of the VSH United group of companies. It commenced commercial activities with the production and distribution of powder detergents for household and industrial use, with initial equipment including a spray tower, a steam boiler and a box-filling machine. The potential for success in different detergent types was quickly realized and the company expanded to include a wide variety of liquid detergents, insect repellent and plastic packaging materials. In January 2010 replacement investments in the plastic and liquid equipment resulted in new production facilities, which further readied the company for regional expansion. In 2012, emphasis was placed on continued expansion in export markets and investing in research and development. Since then CIC has successfully re-launched and expanded many of its brand portfolios and has started exporting to four new destinations. With just over 115 employees, CIC produces and markets Ozon, Sun, Klinol, Tropical Bush and Supro Extreme products for its customer base in Suriname and most regional markets.
