Overview
Conrad Energy is a United Kingdom-based energy company that describes itself as a leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) and the country's number one flexible energy provider. Founded in 2016 as a flexible energy generator, the company was created to help balance the National Grid at times when renewable sources cannot meet demand. Its portfolio spans gas, batteries, solar, wind and hydrogen, and its official website states that it has 83 sites operational or in construction with a potential to generate 983MW of power. The company is a portfolio company of I Squared Capital, which became principal investor in 2017 with £150M of seed capital, giving Conrad Energy a well-funded and financially robust position. Conrad Energy operates across two connected sides of the energy market. On the generation side, it develops, owns and operates flexible and renewable generation assets, including gas engines, battery energy storage systems, solar farms and other technologies, and bids these into grid and capacity market mechanisms. On the customer side, it buys, sells and manages energy for business customers nationally, having begun working with business customers in 2019 after receiving its Electricity Supply Licence. It also works with energy intermediaries and partners to help business clients save costs and carbon. A distinguishing feature of the company is its proprietary software platform, iON+, which was launched as a new energy asset management platform in September 2025. iON+ uses machine learning and automation to optimise energy distribution from Conrad Energy's power assets, selecting and sending energy from its sites to provide efficiency. The company positions itself at the forefront of shaping a more efficient, reliable and sustainable energy sector, and it has planned and developed some of the largest energy infrastructure projects in Europe. Conrad Energy's growth has been rapid but, in its own words, sustainable. It completed its first site acquisition in 2018, acquired Viridis Power in 2020 to create the largest flexible generation platform in the UK, and acquired its first operational Battery Energy Storage System at Flitwick in 2021. It began developing and acquiring its own renewable generation assets, including its first solar farm, in early 2023. The company also established the Conrad Energy Community Fund in 2021 and has extended sponsorship of Harlequins. It is ISO accredited, works closely with industry regulators, and emphasises health, safety, environmental, social and governance responsibilities.
History
Conrad Energy was set up in 2016 as a flexible energy generator, with the purpose of helping to balance the National Grid when renewable sources cannot meet demand. From the outset, the company's stated drive was to perform this balancing role in a more environmentally friendly way, which led to investment in newer, greener technologies such as batteries and in software to make processes more efficient, saving money and reducing carbon. In 2017, ISQ became principal investor with £150M of seed capital, providing the financial foundation for the company's expansion. The following year, 2018, was a year of firsts: Conrad Energy completed its first site acquisition, had its first development sites pre-qualified for Capacity Market auctions, acquired its first shovel-ready project to export electricity at Chatterley Whitfield, and had its first site bid into the National Grid STOR programme. In 2019, the company received its Electricity Supply Licence, commissioned its first site, and saw its first organic project — originated, developed and constructed by Conrad Energy — go live at Calne. This was also the year it began working with business customers, buying and selling energy. In 2020, the company's trading desk went live, and it acquired Viridis Power, creating what it described as the largest flexible generation platform in the UK. Growth continued in 2021 with the establishment of the Conrad Energy Community Fund and the acquisition of Conrad Energy's first operational Battery Energy Storage System at Flitwick. The company also signed a 104MWh battery energy storage order with GE Renewable Energy. In early 2023, Conrad Energy set about developing and acquiring its own renewable generation assets, including its first solar farm. By this point, in less than a decade and driven by transformational technology, the company had become a leading Independent Power Producer and the UK's number one flexible energy provider. Today Conrad Energy operates 83 UK sites, operational or in construction, with a potential to generate 983MW from a variety of technologies. Its portfolio includes gas, batteries, solar, wind and hydrogen. The company is a portfolio company of I Squared Capital, is well-funded and financially robust, works closely with industry regulators, and is ISO accredited. It optimises and operates its assets using its market-leading software, iON+, which was launched as a new energy asset management platform in September 2025. Over the last few years, Conrad Energy has planned and developed some of the largest energy infrastructure projects in Europe, while rapidly expanding the number of business customers working with it. The company also extended its sponsorship of Harlequins in August 2025 and hosted a webinar with ePower in June 2026 on renewable revenue in a changing GB power market.
