Overview
The Congregation of St. Joseph is a community of vowed Catholic women and lay associates who live and minister in the U.S. and around the world. Its mission is to bring all into unity with God, one another, and with all creation, carried out through prayer, direct service and ministry, partnering with others to serve the dear neighbor, standing with and for the poor and vulnerable, and advocating for systemic change. Through its Mission Network it works with and supports ministries including three Catholic high schools, tutoring and literacy programs, spirituality centers, social service programs, spiritual direction, and pastoral assistance, and it manages and assists in the development of senior living for religious communities. It also supports justice initiatives including anti-racism and inclusion efforts, care of creation, fair and just immigration policies, the abolishment of the death penalty, LGBTQ+ support, and non-violence advocacy. The Congregation has pledged to support and participate in the Laudato Si' Action Platform.
History
The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in 1650. On August 6, 2023, the fourth Leadership Team for the Congregation of St. Joseph took office, consisting of sisters from several of its founding communities, to serve for a term of five years: Sisters Helen Skormisley, Kathy Brazda, Marie Hogan, Pat Warbritton, and Sue Torgersen. On November 14, 2021, the Congregation of St. Joseph pledged to participate in the Laudato Si' Action Platform, a Vatican-sponsored effort facilitated by the Laudato Si' Movement to achieve sweeping environmental sustainability, and developed an ambitious seven-year plan of actions. In 2024, the Congregation announced its largest gift to date in support of Laudato Si' efforts through the global Laudato Si' Movement.
