Overview
Compass Banca is an Italian banking and consumer-finance company headquartered in Milan. Its corporate roots date to 1951, when Mediobanca, Montecatini, Fiat and Snia Viscosa established Compass as a company intended to support industrial and commercial initiatives. Compass entered consumer credit in 1960, initially financing household purchases of durable and semi-durable goods. The company says it has operated as a leading consumer-credit company since 1960 and became a bank in 2015. Its current legal name is Compass Banca S.p.A. The company’s core business is consumer finance. Its offering includes personal loans, loans connected with purchases, credit cards, and cessione del quinto products—repayments made through a portion of an employee’s salary or a pension. It also distributes insurance-related solutions and has developed payment and instalment services, including its buy-now-pay-later platform. Customers can apply for loans online or through the company’s branches; Compass’s website presents both routes and promotes a nationwide branch network. Compass has expanded through partnerships, acquisitions and adjacent financial activities. Its history includes credit-card issuance, payment services, insurance distribution, leasing and credit-management businesses. In more recent years it has developed digital lending and payment instalments, and expanded buy-now-pay-later operations into Switzerland through Soisy and HeidiPay-related activity. The source material identifies Italy and Switzerland as markets for its current HeyLight platform. Compass was founded by a group that included Mediobanca and later became wholly controlled by Mediobanca. Following the completion in September 2025 of the public exchange offer promoted by MPS, Compass’s official company page says it became part of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena Group. The company’s stated scale, with figures dated 30 June 2026 on its official page, includes 343 sales points, 3.5 million active customers, more than 67,000 affiliated dealers, over 500 major partnership agreements, €18 billion in outstanding credit and more than 1,500 employees. These are company-reported figures, not independently verified here.
History
Compass’s corporate history begins in 1951, when Mediobanca, Montecatini, Fiat and Snia Viscosa founded a company called Compagnia Sviluppo Iniziative Industriali Agricole e Commerciali, also known as Compass S.p.A. Its initial purpose was to support Italian companies’ economic and industrial initiatives and exports in countries including Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and India, as well as development in those markets. In 1958, after the other shareholders were repaid, Mediobanca acquired all the company’s shares and took control. A major change of direction came in 1960, when Compass entered consumer credit and began financing households’ purchases of durable and semi-durable goods, particularly home appliances. In 1962 the company shortened its name to Compass S.p.A. Its later development extended into related financial services: it established the leasing company S.E.L.M.A. in 1970 and, in the following decades, added credit management, factoring, property finance and leasing interests. Compass launched its own revolving credit cards in 1989 on Visa and MasterCard networks. During the 2000s, Compass added businesses, products and partnerships. It acquired Creditech in 2001, entered salary-backed lending in 2006, and acquired consumer-credit company Linea in December 2007, incorporating it in 2008 while retaining businesses including Futuro and Ducati Financial Services. It also expanded its credit-card and football-related promotional activity. In 2011 it registered as an Italian payment institution and launched Carta Viva Web, a card designed for e-commerce. In 2013, following Bank of Italy authorization, Compass became an electronic-money institution and launched Compass Pay, an integrated online and offline payment platform. Its insurance-distribution project Compassicura had been launched in 2012. Regulatory authorization from the European Central Bank marked another turning point: in 2015 Compass became Compass Banca S.p.A. The company describes itself as having been a consumer-credit leader since 1960 and a bank since 2015. In 2016 Creditech changed its name to MBCredit Solutions. Compass subsequently expanded digital access to lending: in May 2018 it launched a fully digital web platform for applying for and receiving personal loans online by desktop and mobile. It also introduced an authorized-agency network under the Compass Quinto brand for salary-backed loans. Futuro was merged into its parent, Compass, in November 2020. From 2021, Compass diversified further. It established Compass Rent in the long-term rental sector and launched PagoLight, a payment-deferral service for online and in-store purchases, entering the buy-now-pay-later market. Compass Link added a network of local operators. In 2022 Compass acquired all of Soisy and took a 19.5% stake in Swiss company HeidiPay. In 2023 it acquired HeidiPay Switzerland, establishing a consumer-credit presence in Switzerland. In 2024 PagoLight, integrating Soisy technology and contributions from HeidiPay, became HeyLight, a platform active in Italy and Switzerland according to the supplied account. The latest ownership transition stated in Compass’s official company information is that, after the completion in September 2025 of the public exchange offer promoted by MPS, Compass became part of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena S.p.A. Group. Its official page lists company-scale figures dated 30 June 2026, including 343 points of sale and 3.5 million active customers.
