Overview

The Bürgerstiftung Dresden (community foundation Dresden) is a private, non-profit foundation established in 1999 as the first community foundation in the new German federal states. It was founded with special support from the Körber-Stiftung, which provided premises in its Dresden house and an initial endowment of 100,000 DM. The foundation is headquartered at Villa Reuter in Blasewitz, Dresden. The foundation's purposes cover a broad spectrum: education, civic engagement, monument preservation, health prevention, youth, disaster relief, culture, social affairs, animal welfare and the environment. It uses the income from its free capital to fund projects and acts as a service provider for donors with their own ideas and objectives. More than 250 citizens, associations and companies have contributed to building the foundation's capital and establishing earmarked foundation funds. Under its umbrella, it administers more than 70 trusts, foundation funds and legally independent foundations. The Bürgerstiftung Dresden runs four operational projects with its own staff and supports numerous external projects. It is particularly committed to promoting and honouring voluntary work, in partnership with the state capital Dresden and with support from the Free State of Saxony. Since 2006, it has been entrusted with ensuring the promotion of civic engagement across Saxony under the motto "Wir für Sachsen" (We for Saxony), processing around 6,000 applications annually with a funding volume of over 9 million euros for 24,000 volunteers. The foundation has received the Deutscher Stifterpreis (German Donor Prize) from the Association of German Foundations in 2003 and 2019. It operates the digital volunteering platform ehrensache.jetzt, launched in 2019, to make voluntary engagement more visible and accessible, especially for younger and digitally affine people. The foundation is governed by three bodies: the Executive Board (Vorstand), the Foundation Council (Stiftungsrat) and the Board of Trustees (Kuratorium).

History

The Bürgerstiftung Dresden was founded in 1999 as the first community foundation in the new German federal states. It was established with special support from the Körber-Stiftung, which made available the premises of its Dresden house and provided an initial endowment of 100,000 DM. The foundation is headquartered at Villa Reuter in Blasewitz, Dresden. In its early years, the Bürgerstiftung Dresden supported the establishment of the Erich Kästner Museum, the restoration of the Palais im Großen Garten, and the reopening of the Schillerhäuschen. More than 250 citizens, associations and companies contributed to building the foundation's capital and establishing earmarked foundation funds. The foundation uses the income from its capital, along with donations and third-party funds, to initiate and implement cultural, social, educational and environmental projects in Dresden. In 2002 and 2003, the foundation collected 1.621 million euros in donations for flood relief. For this and other work, it received the Deutscher Stifterpreis (German Donor Prize) from the Association of German Foundations in 2003. Since 2006, the foundation has been commissioned to ensure the promotion of civic engagement across Saxony according to a guideline of the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs under the motto "Wir für Sachsen". In this capacity, it processes around 6,000 applications annually with a funding volume of over 9 million euros for 24,000 volunteers throughout Saxony. In 2019, the foundation launched the digital volunteering platform ehrensache.jetzt to make voluntary engagement more visible, accessible and attractive, especially for younger and digitally affine people. Since 2022, the platform has been expanded. The foundation also received the Deutscher Stifterpreis again in 2019. Currently, the foundation administers more than 70 trusts, foundation funds and legally independent foundations under its umbrella. It runs four operational projects with its own staff, including the Gedenkstätte Sophienkirche-Busmannkapelle (as builder), the Kulturloge (as project sponsor), and a nationally recognized school project through generation dialogue. It also operates the Ehrenamtspass, offering discounted admission to cultural institutions, swimming pools and some businesses for volunteers, and organizes annual thank-you events under the motto "Unbezahlt, aber nicht umsonst" (Unpaid but not for nothing). The foundation is governed by three bodies: the Executive Board (Vorstand), the Foundation Council (Stiftungsrat) and the Board of Trustees (Kuratorium).
