Overview

Commerce Équitable France presents itself as the collective of French actors in the fair trade sector. It is a non-profit association governed by the French law of 1901, with its registered office at 45 bis, avenue de la Belle Gabrielle, 94130 Nogent-sur-Marne Cedex. Its website publishes news, activity reports, an observatory of fair trade, definitions and regulation content, and information on fair trade labels, and it also offers training.

History

Commerce Équitable France publishes a timeline of fair trade. According to that page, fair trade developed in Europe in the post-war years under the impetus of charitable and humanitarian organisations; from the end of the 1950s a Dutch association imported products from developing countries and removed intermediaries little concerned with profit sharing. During the 1960s and 1970s organisations formed in the South with partners based in the North with the aim of creating equity in commercial exchanges. In 1964, producers suffering from the fall in coffee prices launched the appeal 'Trade, not Aid', which the page describes as the foundation of present-day fair trade. The page lists 1964 as the year the slogan 'Trade, not aid!' was pronounced by producer organisations at the United Nations Commission for Trade and Development, 1969 as the first 'World Shops' in England and the Netherlands opened by the association OXFAM, 1974 as the first Artisans du Monde shop in Paris, 1981 as the creation of the Fédération Artisans du Monde, and 1988 as the creation of Max Havelaar in the Netherlands and of a logo placed on 'fair' coffees.
