Overview
Comet Feuerwerk is a German pyrotechnics company headquartered in Bremerhaven that imports and distributes consumer fireworks. It has stood for innovation, quality and enthusiasm for pyrotechnics for more than 70 years and has held a leading position in the German market for decades. Since 2003 the company has operated as Comet Feuerwerk GmbH, and since 12 January 2005 it has been a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based international trading group Li & Fung, which has traditionally been active in the fireworks sector for around 115 years. Within the group, the sister company Shiu Fung Fireworks acts as the link in the corporate network. Comet's product range comprises more than 3,000 articles covering every taste and occasion: large combination boards with spectacular effect pictures, small micro fireworks, large-calibre and extra-loud batteries such as the Black Cat Neon series, the quieter Silence Line, and a broad selection of traditional rockets. The company is a reliable supplier to the retail trade, serving more than 30,000 outlets across Germany. Because the German consumer fireworks market opens its sales floors on only three selling days a year around New Year's Eve, Comet generates almost 95 percent of its annual revenue in those three days, making preparation, trend sensing and logistics critical. Comet operates the industry's largest logistics centre in Bremerhaven, with 25,000 square metres of space, 18 loading docks and around 40,000 pallet spaces for pyrotechnic products. Development, engineering, quality management, distribution and warehousing as well as sales and marketing are bundled at the Bremerhaven location. Manufacturing takes place in selected factories under strict compliance requirements, accompanied by partner Shiu Fung Fireworks with around 100 employees. The company works with BSCI- and SA8000-certified factories and runs one of the industry's largest development departments in China. Quality assurance measures in Germany and China ensure high product safety, and the company is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and meets the requirements of EU Directive 2013/29/EU (Module E). Comet has a history of product innovation: in 2006 it introduced Germany's first combination firework, in 2007 the first remote ignition system for fireworks, in 2008 the first firework combination with more than 500 grams of explosive mass, in 2009 the "Explosive System Power" (ESP) combination system, and since 2019 the quieter "Silence Line" range. The company also pursues sustainability measures, including climate-neutral electricity and gas, participation in the dual system, packaging recycling and a shift toward nearly plastic-free products using biodegradable materials. As one of Germany's largest fireworks suppliers, Comet is a member of the Verband der pyrotechnischen Industrie (Association of the Pyrotechnic Industry).
History
Comet Feuerwerk is a company of the pyrotechnic industry based in Bremerhaven, Germany. It imports and distributes fireworks. The company has stood for innovation, quality and enthusiasm for pyrotechnics for more than 70 years and has held a leading position in Germany for decades. Until 2002 it was the market leader in Germany. Before its current ownership, the company belonged to the Nuremberg-based defence group Diehl and produced fireworks, signal ammunition for aviation and shipping, and practice ammunition for the German armed forces (Bundeswehr). Its sites were the plant in Bremerhaven on the former Donar works site and, from 1999 after the takeover of Piepenbrock Pyrotechnik, also the former Pyrotechnische Fabrik Feistel in Göllheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. Today the company no longer maintains a German production site. Comet Feuerwerk has operated as Comet Feuerwerk GmbH since 2003. Since 12 January 2005 it has been a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based international trading group Li & Fung, which has traditionally been active in the fireworks sector for around 115 years; Li & Fung was founded in 1906. The group-internal sister company Shiu Fung Fireworks acts as the link within the corporate network. In spring 2013, after the loss of a significant major customer, Comet had to register short-time work. In August 2013, within the framework of an asset deal, the company took over the fireworks business of its former competitor FKW Keller GmbH. This acquisition further expanded its distribution strategy, and Comet now supplies numerous partners throughout the country with tailored product solutions and an extraordinary variety of innovative fireworks articles. With a market share of around 30 percent, Comet ranks second behind market leader Weco Feuerwerk. Comet generates almost 95 percent of its annual revenue in the three selling days before New Year's Eve. As one of the largest fireworks suppliers in Germany, Comet is a member of the Verband der pyrotechnischen Industrie. The company works with BSCI- and SA8000-certified factories and operates one of the largest development departments in the industry in China. Quality assurance measures in Germany and China ensure high product safety. Manufacturing complies with international standards, including International Organization for Standardization (ISO) norms and the regulations of the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM). The company is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and meets the requirements of EU Directive 2013/29/EU (Module E). Manual quality inspections take place on company-owned test grounds in China covering 1,800 square metres and on a 45,000-square-metre test area in Bremerhaven. The tests include heat tests, packaging flammability investigations, break stability tests in a transport simulator and volume measurements. In logistics, Comet has the industry's largest logistics centre in Bremerhaven, with an area of 25,000 square metres and 18 loading docks. The site offers space for around 40,000 pallet spaces for pyrotechnic products. According to its own information, the company supplies more than 30,000 sales outlets throughout Germany. In innovation, the company introduced Germany's first combination firework in 2006. In 2007 it offered the first remote ignition system for fireworks. In 2008 the first firework combination with more than 500 grams of explosive mass was brought to market. In 2009 the company established the "Explosive System Power" (ESP) combination system. Since 2019 the company has offered the "Silence Line", a range of quieter fireworks. In sustainability, the company uses various measures to reduce CO2 emissions. In 2024, the use of climate-neutral electricity saved 176 tonnes of CO2. Climate-neutral natural gas compensated a further 122 tonnes. Comet also participated in the dual system (Noventiz Dual) and achieved a reduction of about 636 tonnes of CO2 from 2021 to 2024. Through recycling of packaging materials, up to 2,197 tonnes of material were saved from 2021 to 2023. In addition, the company pursues a sustainable realignment in its handling of plastic. According to its own information, 99 percent of its roughly 600 articles can now be offered almost plastic-free, affecting both product components and their packaging. For example, plastic rocket tip caps, plastic bases of fountains and plastic fuse covers were replaced by biodegradable materials. Through this commitment, which also spans industries, the company has been able to assume an international pioneering role in the area of biodegradable fireworks.
