Robert Hadden sexual-abuse case and institutional accountability crisis
Robert Hadden, a former obstetrician-gynecologist associated with Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian, sexually abused patients over a period extending from approximately 1987 to 2012. He was convicted in federal court in January 2023 and sentenced to 20 years in prison in July 2023. The case led to extensive civil litigation, public criticism of institutional oversight and reporting, survivor settlements, patient notification, an external investigation, and new patient-safety initiatives.

Survivor fund and external investigation announced
Following Hadden’s federal conviction, Columbia and CUIMC announced that nearly 6,500 former patients would be notified, survivors could seek compensation through a new $100 million settlement fund, and an external investigator would examine how the abuse continued for so long.

Earlier civil settlement with Hadden survivors
Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian announced a settlement with 79 women who had been patients of Hadden. The agreement followed earlier complaints, civil claims, and criminal proceedings involving the former physician.
