Overview

Coloured Voices Media Foundation is a youth-led LGBTQ+ human rights organization based in Uganda. Founded in 2021 during the second COVID-19 lockdown by a group of four LGBT youths who faced family rejection and homelessness, the organization was created as a mutual support network that evolved into a structured social intervention project. Its mission is to advocate for and promote the human rights, health, and socioeconomic well-being of LGBTQ+ youths in Uganda and across Africa. The foundation uses media, film, performing arts, cultural goods, still art, and innovation to demystify homophobic lies, change mindsets, and counter anti-gay propaganda. It operates under principles of inclusion, equity, and transparency, with a focus on resilience, community, and systemic progress. While currently based in Uganda, Coloured Voices aims to extend its influence across the African continent to change perceptions regarding LGBTQ+ rights. The organization emerged in response to the hostile sociopolitical climate for LGBTQ+ people in Uganda, exacerbated by the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA). It centers its efforts on protecting queer youth while promoting creative arts as tools for expression and empowerment.

History

Coloured Voices Media Foundation was founded in 2021 during Uganda's second COVID-19 lockdown by a group of four LGBT youths who were on the verge of committing suicide after being ousted and hunted by their family members for being LGBTQIA. Being chased from home caused them severe socioeconomic hardships and mental health challenges, which inspired them to find solutions to homophobia and anti-gay propaganda. Without support from extended family, established LGBT activists, or organizations, the founders created a support group where they shared and encouraged each other. Although staying in different places, they met online to support each other through difficult situations, holding conference calls that were described as liberating. Over time, this virtual space evolved into a structured social intervention project designed to combat stigma and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ population in Uganda. Initially, the group organized online meetings to analyze the impact of homophobia in their local environments. From these meetings, they concluded that the most effective strategy to reduce social hostility toward LGBTQ+ Ugandans was to dismantle the discourses of homophobic movements. Coloured Voices is founded on the premise that sexual diversity is an inherent element of human identity and not the result of any kind of indoctrination. Today, the foundation focuses on protecting queer youth while promoting creative arts as tools for expression and empowerment, operating under principles of inclusion, equity, and transparency.
