Colóquio

Colóquio is the collective title used for a family of Portuguese magazines issued by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. The series began in January 1959 with Colóquio, Revista de Artes e Letras, a periodical that combined coverage of the visual arts with literary criticism, creative writing, and cultural commentary. Rather than operating as a conventional commercial magazine brand, Colóquio developed as an institutionally supported publishing program intended to advance serious discussion of art, literature, science, education, and society. The original magazine ran until December 1970 and reached 61 issues. Its arts section was edited by physician and art historian Reynaldo dos Santos, while the literary section was edited by Hernâni Cidade. The visual identity of the early issues was shaped first by Bernardo Marques and later by Marcelino Vespeira and Fernando de Azevedo, reflecting the foundation's close relationship with Portuguese artists and cultural institutions. In February 1971, the original publication was divided into two specialist periodicals: Colóquio Artes and Colóquio Letras. Colóquio Artes concentrated on the visual and performing arts, including music, ballet, theatre, and cinema. José-Augusto França served as editor, with Carlos de Pontes Leça assisting in the performing-arts fields and Fernando Azevedo acting as artistic consultant. The magazine appeared every two months at first, moved to a quarterly schedule in 1978, and published 111 issues before ending in December 1996. Its remit was not limited to Portuguese-speaking contributors; it also gave notable space to artists and writers from outside the Portuguese-speaking world, particularly from France. Colóquio Letras became the surviving core of the series. It has focused primarily on Portuguese-language literature from Portugal, Brazil, and Portuguese-speaking Africa. Its editorial program combines new poetry and fiction with essays and archival work intended to reassess neglected, forgotten, or insufficiently studied authors. The periodical also occasionally broadens its linguistic scope, as illustrated by two 1996 issues devoted to Galician-language writing. It was initially published bimonthly, became quarterly in 1992, and since 2009 has appeared once every four months. The Colóquio family also included Colóquio Educação e Sociedade and Colóquio Ciências, both launched in 1988. These titles extended the foundation's publishing interests into education, society, and science but were later discontinued. Colóquio therefore functions today mainly as a literary and cultural publishing identity associated with Colóquio Letras, while retaining historical significance as one of the Gulbenkian Foundation's long-running vehicles for Portuguese intellectual and artistic life.

The publication schedule changed from bimonthly to quarterly in 1992 and to one issue every four months from 2009. Two further titles, Colóquio Educação e Sociedade and Colóquio Ciências, began in 1988. They broadened the foundation's periodical publishing into education, society, and science but are no longer published. The brand's current identity is consequently centered on Colóquio Letras, while the wider Colóquio name represents a long-running foundation-sponsored record of Portuguese intellectual, artistic, and literary publishing.
