Overview

Cokin filters were created by Jean Coquin, a French professional landscape and fashion photographer. In 1972 he pioneered the use of CR39 organic glass for photographic filters, and the company Cromofilter SA was founded the following year, in 1973, to distribute the first range of screw-in filters. In 1978 he invented the square filter system, named 'Series A', based on a plastic drop-in holder accommodating multiple square or rectangular filters of 67mm width, secured by an adapter ring. Since 2011, COKIN France has been a subsidiary of the KENKO-TOKINA Group, and COKIN France continues to manufacture products under the Cokin brand. COKIN Distribution is the division of COKIN France responsible for distributing TOKINA lenses, SLIK tripods, KENKO binoculars and HOYA optical filters in France and French-speaking countries.

History

Cokin filters are the brainchild of Jean Coquin, a highly successful French professional landscape and fashion photographer working for world-leading brands in the 1960s. His desire to break through the limitations of film photography at the time led him to develop filters for his own use, and he went on to design and create filters combining quality, affordability and ease of use. In 1972 Jean Coquin pioneered the use of CR39 organic glass for creating photographic filters. The 'Cromofilter SA' company was founded the following year in 1973 to distribute the first range of screw-in filters, including graduated density filters in which the glass could be rotated by using a small lever. In 1978, following on from his screw-in filters, Jean Coquin invented the square filter system, which he presented at Photokina. Named 'Series A', the system is based on a plastic 'drop-in' holder that can accommodate multiple square or rectangular filters with a width of 67mm, with an adapter ring available in various sizes securing the holder to the lens of a camera. Immediate success saw distribution partners being signed up in the UK and USA, leading on to global expansion in over 30 countries. Since 2011, COKIN France has been a subsidiary of the KENKO-TOKINA Group, and alongside its distribution activities COKIN France continues to manufacture products under the Cokin brand.
