Overview
COEDO BREWERY is a Japanese craft beer brand. Its parent company, Kyodo Shoji, has engaged in organic farming since the 1970s in Kawagoe, and the idea of brewing beer grew out of Kawagoe's practice of planting barley as green manure. The brewery was established in 1996 after obtaining a happoshu production license, and in 1997 it obtained a beer/happoshu sales license and opened the Miyoshi plant, inviting fourth-generation German brewmaster Christian Mitterbauer to teach its brewers for five years. In 2006 COEDO was created as a craft beer brand, and in 2016 the brewery relocated to a renovated building with sustainable production practices. Its beers include Ruri, Kyara, Marihana, Shikkoku, Shiro and Beniaka.
History
COEDO's parent company, Kyodo Shoji, has engaged in organic farming since the 1970s under the concept of 'safe, secure and delicious', walking together with the farming town of Kawagoe. Kawagoe has long had an agricultural practice of planting barley as 'green manure' to keep soil healthy, and modern Kawagoe farmers plowed the barley back into the fields without harvesting it; the idea of using this to make beer became the starting point for brewing. In 1994 a revision of the Liquor Tax Act triggered a 'local beer' boom, but it declined due to immature brewing techniques, high prices and strong flavors, and COEDO was affected. In 1996 COEDO obtained a happoshu production license and the COEDO brewery was established; after trial and error it succeeded in brewing 'Satsumaimo Lager' using sweet potatoes grown in Kawagoe, which led to today's Beniaka. In 1997 it obtained a beer/happoshu sales license and opened the COEDO Brewery Miyoshi plant; that year it invited Christian Mitterbauer, a fourth-generation brewmaster from Germany, and COEDO's brewers learned authentic brewing under him for five years. In 2006 COEDO was created as a craft beer brand, proposing the new concept of 'craft beer' rather than 'local beer' as a tourist souvenir, and expressing its thoughts in the words 'Beer Beautiful'. In September 2016 the brewery was relocated for sustainable craft beer production in harmony with nature, renovating a beautiful building constructed in the Showa 50s era that had been used as a corporate training facility; brewing water comes from a well on the site, wastewater is purified at the brewery, and spent malt and yeast are used as feed for cattle and pigs in a regional circulation system. In July 2020 COEDO BREWERY THE RESTAURANT and COEDO KIOSK were opened, aiming at 'co-creation of town-making with a brewery'.
