Overview

Japan Coca-Cola states that it develops 40 brands and more than 600 products in Japan, including global brands such as Coca-Cola as well as brands developed for the Japanese market such as Georgia, Aquarius, I LOHAS, and Ayataka. Its official history page describes the start of Coca-Cola sales in Japan in the Taisho era and the beginning of domestic bottle manufacturing in 1949.

History

According to the official history page of Japan Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola sales in Japan began in the Taisho era. In 1919, Meiji-ya, a major food import trading company, launched Coca-Cola and ran an advertisement in its PR magazine Shikou. The page states that Coca-Cola had previously been an imported product, but soon after the end of the war, a representative of The Coca-Cola Export Corporation came to Japan, a Japan branch was set up, and from 1946 onward bottling plants were established in six locations in Japan. In 1949, domestic manufacturing started in earnest. In 1952, Jinzaburo Takanashi went to the United States and, after negotiations with The Coca-Cola Export Corporation, obtained sales rights for Tokyo. In 1956, Tokyo Beverage Co., Ltd. (later Tokyo Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Ltd.) was founded, creating Japan's first bottler company.
