History
The site of Coaska Bayside Stores was originally occupied by the Sumitomo Heavy Industries Yokosuka plant (formerly the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal) and the Hayashikane Shipbuilding Yokosuka shipyard. After the Sumitomo Heavy Industries plant closed in 1978 due to recession, the land was sold and plans for a commercial facility emerged. In May 1982, the Yokosuka City Council announced the 'Yokosuka Sea Window' concept, and Daiei expressed interest in opening a store. Despite opposition from local shopping streets, the project moved forward. Construction began in September 1989, and on April 25, 1991, Shoppers Plaza Yokosuka opened under the Shoppers Plaza brand operated by Daiei. The initial tenant count was 220, but many stores withdrew within a year. In 1995, Daiei expanded its own sales floor. In 2016, operations were transferred to AEON Retail, and the core store was rebranded from Daiei to AEON. The facility closed temporarily on March 31, 2019, and after a major renovation, reopened as Coaska Bayside Stores on April 24, 2020, with a full opening on June 5, 2020. The cinema, Yokosuka HUMAX Cinemas, which had operated since 1991 (originally as Yokosuka Joy Cinema), also closed in 2019 and reopened in 2020 with 10 screens. The facility is now operated by Yokosuka Mall Leasing LLC.
