Overview

Club degli Editori is an Italian book club and mail-order publisher founded in 1960 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. It specialises in selling books by correspondence, primarily reissues of contemporary novels already published by other publishers, offered to club members. The club operates on a subscription model: members commit to purchasing at least one book per month from the catalogue, and if no selection is made, a pre-selected title is automatically sent. Membership can be cancelled only after a minimum purchase of four books, or within 14 days of receiving books under distance-selling regulations. The club is part of the Mondadori Group, which also owns Euroclub, another major Italian book club. Since 1 July 1999, Club degli Editori has been part of Mondolibri S.p.A., a joint venture between Arnoldo Mondadori Editore and Bertelsmann AG, which also acquired Euroclub that year. On 1 July 2011, Mondolibri S.p.A. was merged into Mondadori Retail S.p.A. Today, the club operates an online outlet offering discounts of 50% to 70% on books, with a promotional offer of three books for €1.00 upon joining.

History

Club degli Editori was founded in 1960 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. Its nature reflects the "book clubs" that emerged in the United States in the 1930s, when reading and access to bookstores were reserved for an elite audience. Book clubs joined newspaper-stand book distributions to encourage reading among less affluent people by offering low-priced editions. On 1 July 1999, Club degli Editori became part of the new company Mondolibri S.p.A., a collaboration between Arnoldo Mondadori Editore and the publisher Bertelsmann AG, extending its activities to online sales. Mondolibri also acquired the other main company in the sector in Italy, Euroclub, that same year. On 1 July 2011, Mondolibri S.p.A. was merged into Mondadori Retail S.p.A. Today, Club degli Editori operates as an online outlet offering discounts from 50% to 70% on books, with a promotional offer of three books for €1.00 upon joining.
