Overview
Closer Records is a French independent rock record label founded in 1983 in Le Havre by Philippe Debris, owner of the Closer record shop. The label was created to release the second album by The Barracudas, who were looking for a record company. It went on to release records until the early 1990s, maintaining a rock-oriented trajectory. The catalogue alternates between local Le Havre groups (Fixed-up, Marc Minelli), national acts (Les Thugs, DumDum Boys), and French releases by foreign groups (Sunnyboys, Beasts of Bourbon, and the Ramones' Too Tough to Die in 1984). After a hiatus, the label resumed activity in 2013 and continues to release new material and reissues.
History
Closer Records was founded in 1983 in Le Havre, France, by Philippe Debris, who owned the Closer record shop. The label was established specifically to release the second album by The Barracudas, who were seeking a record company. The first release was The Barracudas' Mean Time (catalogue CL 0001) in 1983. That same year, the label released records by Bad Brains, Dream Syndicate, Marc Minelli, Bruce Joyner and the Plantations, The Dickies, The Nomads, Richard Barone & James Mastro, and Sunnyboys. In 1984, Closer Records released The Barracudas' Endeavour to Persevere, The Only Ones' Remains, Paul Collins' Beat's To Beat or Not to Beat, Fixed Up's self-titled album, The Nomads' Temptation Pays Double, Bruce Joyner and the Plantations' Slave of Emotion, and notably the Ramones' Too Tough to Die (CL 0027) for the French market. The label continued through the 1980s, releasing albums by The Beasts of Bourbon (The Axeman's Jazz, 1985), The Sleep, Sunnyboys, The Batmen, Civilisation Machine, Fixed Up, Les Thugs (Radical Histery, 1986; Electric Trouble, 1986), Kid Pharaon & The Lonely Ones, Shredded Ermines, DumDum Boys (Nothing Means Nothing, 1988), Les Shtauss, and The Chasmbrats. The label's activity slowed in the early 1990s, with releases such as La Bande à La Close's Ah! Mon dieu... (CL 0100) in 1990 and Shredded Ermines' Fall Souls (CLCD 101) in 1990. After a hiatus, Closer Records resumed operations in 2013, releasing new albums and reissues by artists including BBC Get Closer!, The Barracudas (picture disc reissue of Mean Time), Hope Storms, Fixed Up (reissue of first LP), The Sonic Invaders, Mystery Machine, Bruce Joyner and Atomic Clock, Romanée Counteez, Radiocity Shakers, Whodunit, The Fab Mods, The New Christs, The Curse, Primevals, Asphalt Tuaregs, Peter Zaremba's Rock Delegation / Rob Sweeney's Crummy Stuff, The Dark Rags, The Plastic Invaders, DumDum Boys (reissue with bonus tracks), Guttercats, Three Headed Dog, Cantharide, The Last Killers, Indian Ghost, and compilations such as Eyes on you Volume 2 and The Trap Is Set!. The label remains active, with upcoming releases planned for Bratchman, Skin A Buck, Tio Manuel, and others.
