Overview

Classic Theatre Cobalt (CTC) is a non-for-profit corporation founded in 2003 that operates a live entertainment venue in Cobalt, Ontario, Canada — a community known as "Ontario's Most Historic Town." The organization presents theatre, music, comedy, dance, and other live events each year, primarily featuring Canadian artists. Its intimate 250-seat soft-seat theatre was built in 1926 during Cobalt's silver boom and has remained a theatre space for nearly a century. CTC is a registered charitable organization in Canada and is run by one staff member supported by many volunteers. Its mission is to create and foster a centre of the arts serving the diverse population of South Temiskaming, and its vision is to be a dynamic, accessible, and vibrant facility offering a wide variety of arts and cultural programming. The theatre sells season packages and individual show tickets, including professional series and additional shows. Governance is provided by a Board of Directors, with a General Manager and a Marketing & Box Office Manager handling operations.

History

The Classic Theatre building was constructed in 1926 during Cobalt's silver boom in the 1920s, originally opening as a vaudeville theatre. Over the following decades, as most other live entertainment venues in the area closed, the Classic Theatre became the most popular movie house in the region, remembered for decades of popcorn and ten-cent films. In 1973, after 47 years as a community stage, cinema, and live entertainment venue, the Classic Theatre screened its last picture show and closed its doors. For twenty years it stood silent, used for storage and seemingly destined for the same fate as its predecessors. In the fall of 1993, the Town of Cobalt, as part of its economic revitalization plan and in cooperation with the provincial and federal governments, initiated a complete reconstruction of the theatre. The goal was to give the Temiskaming Region a beautiful, modern, and fully equipped artistic venue. Over the following six months, the project was realized and surpassed expectations. On June 4, 1994, the Classic Theatre held its gala opening, and the old theatre once again echoed with applause. In 2003, Classic Theatre Cobalt (CTC) was founded as a non-for-profit corporation and has been a CRA-registered charitable organization since then. CTC has continued to provide live music and entertainment events each year, including theatre, music, comedy, and dance, presenting many Canadian artists in its intimate 250-seat soft-seat theatre. The facility has become a cultural hub for the community, run by one staff member and many dedicated volunteers.
