Overview

CKND-DT is a television station serving Winnipeg and surrounding areas in Manitoba, Canada. It operates as Global Winnipeg, an owned-and-operated station of the Global Television Network, which is part of Corus Entertainment. The station broadcasts on virtual channel 9 and provides a mixture of national Global programming, syndicated entertainment and locally produced news and public-affairs content. The station developed from the cross-border relationship between Winnipeg viewers and KCND-TV, a U.S. station based in Pembina, North Dakota. KCND relied heavily on advertising directed at the Winnipeg market, creating an opportunity for a Canadian broadcaster to establish a locally licensed alternative. CanWest Broadcasting acquired KCND's facilities and equipment and used them as the foundation for a new Winnipeg service. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission awarded CanWest the Winnipeg channel 9 licence in September 1974, and CKND began broadcasting on August 31, 1975. KCND and CKND briefly simulcast a telethon during the transition before KCND left the air permanently. CKND expanded its Manitoba reach through transmitters and rebroadcasters, including a channel 2 service that began broadcasting in 1982. Its early technical footprint was designed to reach viewers across Winnipeg and western Manitoba. During the 1980s, the station also supported Manitoba's emerging film industry by funding television films. In 1997, CanWest's stations adopted the Global brand, making CKND part of the national Global network while retaining a strong local identity. The station has been particularly important as a local news outlet. Its programming has included morning, supper-hour and late-evening newscasts, weekend news, weather, community reporting and political programming. CKND introduced a weekend 10 p.m. newscast in 2009, began high-definition local news in late 2011, launched a three-hour weekday morning newscast in 2012 and expanded its late-evening program to one hour later that year. It also operated Skyview 1, described as Winnipeg's first television news helicopter, until the aircraft was grounded in 2017. CKND moved its operations from St. Mary's Road to downtown Winnipeg in 2008. Its current studios and transmitter facilities are associated with 201 Portage. The station completed its transition from analog broadcasting in 2011 and later moved its digital allocation from UHF channel 40 to UHF channel 19 while retaining virtual channel 9. In 2016, Shaw Media, the successor to CanWest's media operations, was acquired by Corus Entertainment. CKND consequently became part of Corus's broadcast portfolio, alongside other Global stations and related media properties. The station remains an active Winnipeg broadcaster under the Global News and Global Entertainment brands.

History

CKND-DT emerged from a cross-border broadcasting and advertising situation involving KCND-TV in Pembina, North Dakota. Although KCND was licensed in the United States, much of its commercial business depended on Winnipeg advertisers and viewers. This encouraged Canadian broadcasters to seek a Winnipeg licence that could retain the market domestically. CanWest Broadcasting, associated with Manitoba businessman Izzy Asper and partners Paul Morton and Seymour Epstein, negotiated to acquire KCND's assets. The transaction was conditional on receiving Canadian regulatory approval. In September 1974, the CRTC awarded CanWest the Winnipeg channel 9 licence. CanWest formally took control of KCND's operations in March 1975 and prepared a new Winnipeg station using acquired equipment, staff and facilities. CKND signed on August 31, 1975, broadcasting on channel 9 over the air and channel 12 on cable. KCND briefly continued alongside it, including a joint presentation of the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, but left the air after the transition. The station initially operated from St. Mary's Road and used transmission infrastructure intended to provide broad Manitoba coverage. A former KCND tower was later relocated to Minnedosa, helping extend service into western Manitoba. CKND also developed rebroadcasting capacity, including CKND-TV-2, which began broadcasting in 1982. In the mid-1980s, the station supported local film production by financing television films and scheduling some projects in overnight periods to preserve their eligibility for later network sales and awards consideration. CanWest rebranded its television stations as Global in 1997. CKND consequently became Global Winnipeg while continuing to produce local news and community programming. Its facilities moved downtown in September 2008. The station launched a weekend late-evening newscast in 2009, began digital transmission in 2010, shut down its analog service in 2011 and introduced high-definition local news later that year. News expansion continued in 2012 with a three-hour weekday morning program, a news helicopter and a longer late-evening newscast. Ownership changed in 2016 when Corus Entertainment acquired Shaw Media, the media business that had succeeded CanWest's broadcasting operations. CKND remained a Global owned-and-operated station and its news programs adopted standardized Global News titles. The station today operates from 201 Portage in downtown Winnipeg, with local programming focused on news, weather, public affairs and community issues alongside national Global content.
