Overview

CJ ENM Entertainment Division is the entertainment and mass-media business of South Korea's CJ ENM. The division is the successor to CJ E&M, a company created through the consolidation of several CJ Group media, entertainment, film, music, gaming, and commerce-related operations. Although CJ E&M operated as a separate company for much of the 2010s, it became the entertainment side of CJ ENM after its 2018 combination with CJ O Shopping. The merger made CJ O Shopping the surviving legal entity and created the CJ ENM name, commonly expanded as CJ Entertainment and Merchandising. The division's origins date to 2010, when O Media Holdings was established. In 2011, following the combination of seven CJ Group businesses, the company adopted the CJ E&M name. The constituent businesses included CJ Media, On-Media, Mnet Media, CJ Entertainment, CJ Games, CJ Internet, and the media division of CJ O Shopping. This structure gave the company a broad base across television channels, program production, film investment and distribution, music recording and artist management, gaming, and digital media. Its media-content operations have included television networks and digital brands such as tvN, Mnet, OCN and related movie channels, Tooniverse, DIA TV, M2, Studio Choom, and other specialized services. The division has also worked through production companies and affiliated studios, including Studio Dragon and a number of CJ ENM Studios labels. These operations cover scripted series, unscripted programs, animation, factual content, digital video, channel distribution, and advertising support. Studio Dragon and related production entities have helped extend CJ ENM's drama and television production capabilities beyond its owned channels. Film is another major area. Through CJ Entertainment and associated production, publishing, investment, and distribution businesses, the division participates in the financing, production, marketing, and release of Korean and international films. Its wider film network has included Cinema Service, JK Film, Filament Pictures, Yong Film, Moho Film, 413 Pictures, and investments or relationships involving international production companies. The division has also maintained interests in overseas content and entertainment ventures, although the precise ownership of individual affiliates has changed over time. Music operations combine record-label activity, artist representation, music production, publishing, distribution, concerts, and entertainment investment. Brands and affiliated companies listed in connection with the division include WakeOne, AOMG, H1ghr Music, Amoeba Culture, MODHAUS, Lapone Entertainment, and Stone Music Entertainment. The division also organizes or supports major music and fan-culture properties, notably the MAMA Awards and KCON. These activities have made the business an important vehicle for exporting Korean popular culture and connecting Korean artists with audiences in Asia and other international markets. CJ ENM expanded its regional infrastructure during the 2010s. It established a Southeast Asian headquarters in Hong Kong in 2016 and opened a Singapore office in 2018 to support channel distribution and advertising sales. Its international activities have included co-managed or affiliated operations in Japan and relationships with overseas film and television companies. The division's portfolio has also included theatrical productions, animation production and publishing, merchandising, and integrated marketing solutions. The division is therefore broader than a conventional music label. Music is one of its visible businesses, but its scope also encompasses television networks, content studios, film, live events, animation, performing arts, digital media, and marketing services. Some historically associated assets are no longer part of the portfolio: the game business was separated in 2014 and developed into Netmarble, while CJ ENM's interest in Belift Lab was sold to HYBE in 20…

History

CJ ENM Entertainment Division traces its corporate history to O Media Holdings, established in 2010. In 2011, O Media Holdings was renamed CJ E&M, short for CJ Entertainment & Media, after the integration of seven CJ Group businesses. The combination brought together CJ Media, On-Media, Mnet Media, CJ Entertainment, CJ Games, CJ Internet, and the media operation of CJ O Shopping. Rather than focusing on a single entertainment format, the resulting company was designed as a broad media group with interests in television, film, music, gaming, digital content, and related services. During the 2010s, CJ E&M developed a portfolio of television channels and content operations. Its network family included tvN, Mnet, OCN and associated movie channels, Tooniverse, DIA TV, and several digital and specialist services. It also operated or supported production businesses responsible for scripted television, unscripted programming, animation, digital video, and other forms of media content. Studio Dragon became a significant part of the group's drama and television production ecosystem, while other labels and studios broadened the range of content produced and distributed under the CJ umbrella. Film was organized around CJ Entertainment and a wider group of production, investment, publishing, and distribution businesses. The portfolio included Cinema Service and a number of affiliated or invested production companies. This allowed CJ E&M to participate across the film value chain, from project financing and production to marketing and theatrical distribution. The company also developed international relationships and investments, reflecting CJ's wider objective of taking Korean content and entertainment formats into overseas markets. Music represented another central pillar. The business included artist management, labels, music production, publishing, distribution, concerts, events, and entertainment investment. The associated portfolio has included WakeOne, AOMG, H1ghr Music, Amoeba Culture, MODHAUS, Lapone Entertainment, and Stone Music Entertainment. CJ E&M also built large-scale cultural properties around live music and fandom, including KCON and the MAMA Awards. These events complemented the company's recorded-music and television activities by combining performances, media exposure, brand partnerships, and international audience development. The group pursued regional expansion during this period. In 2016, CJ E&M established a Southeast Asian headquarters in Hong Kong. In 2018, it opened an office in Singapore to assist with channel distribution and advertising-sales support. Its international network also included Japan-related operations and partnerships, as well as connections to North American and other overseas film and television businesses. A major structural change occurred in 2018. CJ E&M merged with CJ O Shopping, with the transaction announced in May and the new CJ ENM scheduled to begin operation on July 1. CJ O Shopping was the surviving entity, while the former CJ E&M operations became the entertainment side of CJ ENM. The reorganization linked entertainment content with commerce and merchandising, while preserving the division's television, film, music, event, animation, and marketing activities. The portfolio has changed since the original CJ E&M period. The game division was spun off in 2014 and subsequently developed into Netmarble. Belift Lab, a joint venture associated with CJ ENM and HYBE, was no longer held by CJ ENM after its interest was sold to HYBE in August 2023. Other holdings have also varied, and some listed affiliates have been minority investments rather than wholly owned businesses. The division has faced controversies and litigation. In 2015, it was accused of mobilizing young employees to fill seats at an annual shareholders' meeting, allegedly to discourage dissenting shareholders. In the same year, DFSB Kollective sued CJ E&M and CJ E&M America in the United States over alleged copyright infringement and Digital Millennium Copyright Act violations. CJ E&M contested the claims and linked the American case to dissatisfaction with an earlier Seoul proceeding. These matters form part of the division's documented corporate and legal history, although they do not define its principal business model. Today, CJ ENM Entertainment Division is best understood as a diversified content and entertainment platform rather than only a record label. Its activities span television channels and studios, film, music and artist management, live events, animation, theatrical production, digital media, and integrated marketing. Through CJ ENM and the wider CJ Group, it continues to connect Korean entertainment production with regional and global distribution.
