Overview

CityVision was a private regional television broadcaster and film/video production company based in Mönchengladbach, Germany, operating under the legal name CityVision GmbH & Co. KG. It described itself as the "Stadtfernsehen" (city television) for Mönchengladbach and the surrounding area, combining a local news and magazine channel with a commercial production house that made advertising spots, image films, event videos, documentaries, product films, aerial footage and trade-fair films for businesses and private clients. The station's origins lay in a monthly DVD publication that reported on events in Mönchengladbach, shown on screen terminals at locations such as the airport. After talks with the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM) beginning in 2006 and the founding of the GmbH in 2007, CityVision went on air on 19 January 2009, launched with a symbolic push of a red button by Oberbürgermeister Norbert Bude. Its studio was located in the Odenkirchen-Güdderath district. The flagship programme, "CityVision Aktuell", ran Monday to Friday with regional news, video-reporter street interviews, event coverage and weather, followed by themed slots such as Sport Kompakt, Backstage, LetsPlay, Fohlen TV, a cinema tip and Ausgecheckt. Weekend and year-end compilations were broadcast as "CityVision – Die Woche" and "CityVision – Das Jahr". CityVision was distributed via the Unitymedia cable networks in Mönchengladbach, Erkelenz with Wegberg, Krefeld, Grevenbroich with Jüchen, Rommerskirchen and the entire Kreis Viersen, reaching more than 223,000 households with analogue cable. It was also available online through its website, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, and via the Telekom Entertain IPTV archive. A 2010 study by Hochschule Niederrhein found over 22,000 daily viewers of "CityVision Aktuell"; a follow-up study for the 1,000th edition on 27 February 2013 reported an average of 52,000 viewers and 87 percent name recognition among the population. The Rheinische Post newspaper group held 60 percent of the shares, and selected contributions appeared on its website. CityVision ceased broadcasting in 2019. In late June/early July 2019 a digital information board told viewers the station could not be received for technical reasons; from mid-July 2019 the board stated that the station had voluntarily ended distribution. The company's website continued to present its production services and contact details at Kapuzinerplatz 12 in Mönchengladbach.

History

CityVision began not as a television channel but as a monthly DVD publication reporting on events in Mönchengladbach, including coverage such as the fire at the Zentralbad on 23 July 2001. These compiled reports were played on screen terminals at various locations in the city, for example at the airport. First talks with the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM) were held as early as 2006. After the founding of the GmbH in 2007 and the construction of the broadcasting centre, the CityVision channel went on air on 19 January 2009. With a symbolic push of a red button, Oberbürgermeister Norbert Bude gave the starting signal for the station's first current-affairs news programme. In the television studio in the Odenkirchen-Güdderath district, managing director Thomas Manglitz, editorial director Stephan Lenzen and presenter Marion Cürlis jointly moderated the premiere. The station's core programme was "CityVision Aktuell", a news show broadcast Monday to Friday covering the Mönchengladbach region. Video reporters asked citizens for their opinions on current topics, and event reports were also shown. After the weather, themed slots followed: Sport Kompakt on Mondays, Backstage or LetsPlay on Tuesdays, Fohlen TV on Wednesdays, a cinema tip on Thursdays and Ausgecheckt on Fridays. "CityVision – Die Woche" aired on Saturdays and Sundays with highlights from the week's Aktuell editions, while "CityVision – Das Jahr" ran in several episodes at the end of December and beginning of January with the year's news highlights. There was a cooperation with the Rheinische Post, which held 60 percent of the shares in CityVision; selected contributions were shown on the newspaper's website. Content was also distributed on YouTube and Facebook, and via the IPTV platform Telekom Entertain the CityVision Aktuell editions were available in the TV archive for a period of four weeks. In terms of reach, more than 223,000 households with analogue cable in Mönchengladbach, Kreis Viersen, Erkelenz, Grevenbroich, Korschenbroich and Jüchen could receive the local television service. According to a 2010 study by Hochschule Niederrhein, more than 22,000 viewers watched CityVision "Aktuell" daily (excluding the Krefeld region). For the 1,000th edition of the "Aktuell" magazine on 27 February 2013 the study was repeated, finding that an average of 52,000 people tuned in to the local station's programming and that 87 percent of the population recognised the name CityVision. The station was available in the Unitymedia cable networks of Mönchengladbach, Erkelenz with Wegberg, Krefeld, Grevenbroich with Jüchen, Rommerskirchen and the entire Kreis Viersen. Unitymedia initially carried the station in analogue on channel S04, but discontinued analogue television distribution in June 2017, after which no analogue television channels could be received in North Rhine-Westphalia. In late June or early July 2019, a digital information board was shown on the DVB-C slot informing viewers that the station could not currently be received for technical reasons. From mid-July 2019 the board instead stated that the station had ended its distribution at its own request. CityVision had thus ceased broadcasting in 2019. The current edition of the news programme Aktuell had been available as a stream via the station's website. The company continued to present itself online as a film and video production firm offering advertising spots, image videos and documentaries for all industries, with experienced editors, camera operators, editors and voice talent, as well as coverage of private occasions such as weddings, communions and special birthdays.
