Overview
Citycenter Celje is a shopping center located in Celje, Slovenia. It opened on 29 August 1995 as Center Interspar Celje with 22 shops, beginning operations for customers the following day. It is the largest shopping center in the Celje region. The center has two upper floors, around 90 shops on 32,000 m² of surface area, and 800 employees. It is situated on the outskirts of the city. It was designed by architects Heinz H. Brunner and Zuschnig Georg. It is part of the SPAR European Shopping Centers network of European shopping centers. The construction was decided upon due to satisfaction with the performance of Interspar in Ljubljana's BTC. It was built by Vegrad from Velenje. The investment was worth 2.3 billion tolars (excluding equipment). The investors were Allbet and Euromarkt from Salzburg, along with BTC Shopping Center and PSM Mercator from Ljubljana. The then director of the centers in Ljubljana and Celje was Igor Mervič. The ribbon was cut by the then mayor of Celje, Jože Zimšek. In 1997, the center was extended with a section toward Baumax. The expansion and renovation of the 19,761 m² building from December 2004 lasted 14 months. The investor was ASPIAG management AG in cooperation with Spar Slovenija d. o. o. The investment was worth more than 10 billion SIT or 44 million euros. The number of shops increased from 33 to 81. The renovated Center Interspar Celje opened its doors on 15 March 2006 under its current name. In early August 2014, renovation of the eastern part of the shopping center began, lasting three months. New stores joined the existing ones, and some existing ones changed their appearance. The investment was worth 5 million euros. Its most important marketing tool is events, some of which are annual. Each year they mark the business anniversary with a fashion show accompanied by singers, dancers, and other performers. Each time it has a different theme. It publishes its free newspaper Citycenter magazin, renamed from Citycenter until 2013. The opening of the Interspar center negatively affected the business of merchants in the city core. People go to the Interspar center because of easier accessibility and greater offer. Tadej Kozovinc, a long-time restaurateur from the old city core, believes that visitors, due to a lack of parking spaces, drive further and prefer to go to the shopping center: "In the shopping center there is a warm bed, free parking space, happy life, while in the center it is often difficult to get a parking space. Especially for those who are not locals and do not know the city well. If you want to come to our Kuba Libre, you drive to Cankarjeva Street, if those 17 parking spaces are occupied, you drive on and quickly find yourself at the other end of the city. Why would you walk back? It is so much more convenient to go to Citycenter." He also said about Citycenter that people, despite complaining that there is no one in the city core, prefer to visit it because of the greater choice. About the city core itself, he said: "In Celje there is no real city pulse. With the renovation we have shrunk the city, no turnaround happened, there was no offer either. When you open a bar or restaurant, you must be aware that you will probably be in the red for a year or two. People get scared of the initial crisis and leave. That is the reality, and it is a pity that the city does not come to life as it should."
