Overview

City-Arkaden Wuppertal is a shopping centre located in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal, Germany. It is one of the largest shopping centres in the Bergisches Land region, operated by the Hamburg-based ECE Group. The centre opened on 10 October 2001 and spans over 20,000 square metres of retail space across four levels, housing more than 80 specialist shops, cafés, and restaurants. Its distinctive feature is that three of its levels are built as a bridge over the four-lane Morianstraße. The centre offers a diverse mix of retail, including fashion, food, health, hardware, sports, services, and gastronomy. Major tenants include H&M, Görtz17, Thalia, dm-drogerie markt, Douglas, Camp David, and akzenta. The centre also provides extensive services such as a centre management, gift cards, parking, lockers, and accessibility features. It is a key shopping and experience destination in the heart of Wuppertal-Elberfeld, attracting around 35,000 visitors daily and employing approximately 800 people.

History

The City-Arkaden Wuppertal was built as part of an urban development project in the Elberfeld district. The foundation stone was laid on 21 March 2000, and the topping-out ceremony was held on 4 April 2001. The shopping centre officially opened on 10 October 2001, becoming the largest shopping centre in Wuppertal at the time, ahead of the nearby Rathaus-Galerie (opened 1994) and the Wicküler City (converted into a retail park in 1996). The centre was developed and is operated by the ECE Group. In February 2012, ECE management announced plans to expand the centre's retail space. In early 2013, plans were published for an expansion of approximately 16,000 to 20,000 square metres, affecting a large part of the block including the former post office building and Platz am Kolk. The plans faced criticism in January 2013 because listed buildings such as the Kirche am Kolk and the Rex-Theater would be affected. An initiative called "Die Wuppertaler" was formed, and the local church community and two political parties opposed the project. Since mid-2014, the expansion idea has not been pursued further. Today, the City-Arkaden remains a key retail destination in Wuppertal, with over 80 shops and around 35,000 visitors daily.
